The Los Angeles Lakers picked Darius Morris in the 2nd round of the 2011 NBA Draft
The Lakers took 20-year old, 6’4″, 190 point guard Darius Morris with the 41st overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Morris played in 35 games for Michigan last year and he averaged 34.8 minutes, 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.0 steal per game. He played in 67 games in two years in college and he averaged 29.8 minutes, 9.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. Morris will be tutored by Derek Fisher in 2011-12, and he might replace him down the road.

While it’s clearly way way early to make any sort of assessment on Darius Morris’ potential with the Lakers, it’s almost ironic that he would come to the team right upon Phil Jackson’s departure, especially considering the very well-known fact that Phil has always preferred bigger point guards. Darius certainly fits the build and the bottom line is that there are hardly any knocks on his ability, just more so things like “he’s no Brandon Knight” or “he’s no Kyrie Irving.”
The new Lakers’ coach values defense over offense. I think that is the reason that Morris was picked. After all, no one would ever accuse Derek Fisher or Steve Blake of being a good defender. It will be interesting to see how much P.T. Morris gets as a rookie. It might be more than anyone expects right now.
