The Los Angeles Angels shut down 1B C.J. Cron for the rest of 2012

22-year old righty swinging 1B C.J. Cron has been shut down for the rest of the season as he needs surgery to repair his labrum in his right shoulder. He injured it in high school and played his first two years as a pro with a bum shoulder. That makes the numbers he put up all the more impressive. Cron played in 129 games in A-ball this year for the Angels and he was 154 of 525 (.293 avg, .843 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 27 homers, 123 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Cron has now played in 163 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 198 of 668 (.296 avg, .877 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 40 homers, 164 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Cron came into this season as the Angels’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. Imagine what he’s going to do next year when he’s finally healthy.

Luis Jimenez is looking good in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels

24-year old righty swinging 3B Luis Jimenez came into this season as the Angels’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America. He has played in 114 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 142 of 452 (.314 avg, .835 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 14 homers, 78 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Jimenez has now played in 521 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 619 of 2,042 (.303 avg, .857 OPS) with 338 runs scored, 73 homers, 383 RBIs and 79 stolen bases. I look for Jimenez to be called up by the Angels at some point in September.

The Los Angeles Angels release Francisco Rodriguez

The Angels have released 29-year old righty reliever Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez pitched in 40 games (1 start) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 2-3 with a 6.35 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He gave up 57 hits and he walked 31 batters in only 51 innings pitched this year while whiffing 28. So he didn’t have much of a clue where the ball was going after he threw it. Rodriguez pitched in 53 games (0 starts) in two years with the Angels and he was 1-3 with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Rodriguez might get a shot with another team, but the Angels won’t miss him too much going forward.

The Angels have released 28-year old righty swinging catcher Robinzon Diaz. Diaz played in 46 games in AAA-ball this year for the Angels and he was 45 of 158 (.285 avg, .746 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 4 homers, 31 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Diaz has played in 44 games in his two years in the majors and he is 39 of 139 (.281 avg, .659 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 20 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Angels must feel comfortable with the catchers they currently have to let Diaz go. He should be able to find a new job soon.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Fabio Martinez on waivers to the Indians

The Angels have lost 22-year old righty starter/reliever Fabio Martinez on waivers to the Cleveland Indians. Martinez came into this season as the Angels’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America. Martinez pitched in 8 games (all starts) in A-ball for the Angels this year and he was 0-5 with a 10.72 ERA and a 2.56 WHIP. He pitched in 72 games (58 starts) in his first six years in the minors with the Angels and he was 18-13 with 1 save, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Martinez only gave up 240 hits while whiffing 391 batters in his first 297 2/3 innings in the minors, but he walked 205 batters which is the reason the Angels let him go.

Eric Hurley opts to become a free agent, leaving the Los Angeles Angels

26-year old righty starting pitcher Eric Hurley has opted out of his minor league contract to become a free agent. He pitched in 18 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 7-8 with a 5.81 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Hurley has only five games (all starts) of major league experience which came in 2008 with the Texas Rangers. He was 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in those game. The Angels aren’t going to miss him one bit moving forward.

Ariel Pena has been rock solid in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels so far in 2012

23-year old righty starting pitcher Ariel Pena came into this season as the Angels’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America. He has pitched in 16 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 5-5 with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has only given up 82 hits and 35 walks in his first 94 2/3 innings in the minors this year while whiffing 93 batters…..as he has been impressive. Pena has now pitched in 108 games (100 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 44-26 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Pena could be prime trade bait for the Angels at the trade deadline later this month.

The Angels have released 27-year old righty reliever Ysmael Carmona. Carmona pitched in 4 games (0 starts) in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. He has now pitched in 143 games (1 start) in his first five years in the minors and he is 7-16 with 34 saves, a 4.90 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. This is no loss for the Angels.

Ryan Brasier is looking solid in AAA-ball for the Los Angeles Angels

24-year old righty reliever Ryan Brasier came into this season as the Angels’ #29 prospect according to Baseball America. Brasier has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-0 with 8 saves, a 3.62 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. He has now pitched in 194 games (37 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 21-24 with 49 saves, a 4.23 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Brasier might get a chance with the Angels at some point in 2012 if he keeps pitching well in AAA-ball.

C.J. Cron is looking sharp once again in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels

22-year old righty swinging 1B C.J. Cron came into this season as the Angels’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. Cron has played in 54 games in A-ball so far this year for the Angels and he is 59 for 205 (.288 avg, .790 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 7 homers and 40 RBIs. Cron has now played in 88 games in his first two years in the minors for the Angels and he is 103 for 348 (.296 avg, .877 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 20 homers and 81 RBIs. Cron will likely have to learn a new position at some point with Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Kendry Morales ahead of him on the depth chart.
