Howie Kendrick is ripping the ball for the Los Angeles Angels so far this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 May 2011 at 10:14 am

27-year old righty swinging 2B/LF Howie Kendrick is finally turning into the player the Angels have expected him to. He has played in 42 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 52 for 168 (.310 avg, .876 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 6 homers, 17 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. His production numbers are way up this year, as is his batting average as it’s all coming together for Kendrick this year. If Kendrick keeps hitting like he is right now, he could set new career highs in runs scored (67), homers (10), RBIs (75) and stolen bases (14). The Angels hope that Kendrick can stay healthy (it has been an issue in his career so far), because he’s one of the best all-around hitters on the team.

Mark Trumbo is doing a very solid job at 1B for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 10 May 2011 at 7:40 am

When Kendry Morales wasn’t ready to start this season, the Angels were very nervous. But, rookie 25-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo is making the most of his opportunity to start for the Angels. Trumbo has played in 29 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 29 for 106 (.274 avg, .804 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 6 homers, 17 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has been hacking at the plate as he has whiffed 28 times while only walking 4 times so far this year, but that’s nitpicking right now. Trumbo has solidified a roster spot even when Morales returns to action, based on his play so far this season. The Angels need him to keep up the good work as he has been one of the best power hitters on the team.

Peter Bourjos is off to a good start this year for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 3 May 2011 at 8:13 am

24-year old righty swinging CF Peter Bourjos is off to a solid start for the Los Angeles Angels. Bourjos has played in 29 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 30 for 101 (.297 avg, .818 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 4 triples, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 3 stolen bases (he has been caught 4 times). Bourjos has been hacking at the plate as he has whiffed 32 times while walking only 6 times. Bourjos looks much improved over 2010 for the Angels when he played in 51 games and was 37 for 181 (.204 avg, .618 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 6 homers, 15 RBIs and 10 stolen bases (in 13 attempts). Bourjos needs to make more contact this year if he wants to keep his batting average where it is the whole year long. Bourjos is also one of the very best defensive CF in all of baseball, as the only way to get the ball over his head is to whack it over the fence.

Hank Conger is pushing Jeff Mathis for P.T. behind the plate for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 23 April 2011 at 8:29 am

The Angels felt confident in trading Mike Napoli over the winter because they knew that 23-year old switch hitting catcher Hank Conger was ready to play in the show. He came into the 2011 season as the Angels’ #4 ranked prospect according to Baseball America. Conger has played in 10 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 9 for 29 (.310 avg, .946 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers and 7 RBIs. He is starting to push 28-year old righty swinging Jeff Mathis for P.T. Mathis is a solid defensive catcher but he’s never been much of a hitter and that has not changed so far this year. Mathis has played in 11 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 8 for 38 (.211 avg, .620 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. Mathis has only walked 1 time this year while whiffing 13 times, so he’s essentially a hacker that can’t hit. I look for Conger to overtake Mathis as the Angels’ starting catcher before June.

The left side of the infield is hitting well for the Los Angeles Angels

Alberto Callaspo and Maicer Izturis were supposed to share 3B in 2011 for the Angels. Due to starting shortstop Erick Aybar being a tad gimpy, Izturis has been starting at SS and Callaspo at 3B and they have both been ripping the baseball. Callaspo has played in 6 games so far for the Angels this year and he is 9 for 23 (.391 avg, 1.179 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. Callaspo is in the “zone” as he has only whiffed 1 time so far this year. Izturis has played in 6 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 10 for 29 (.345 avg, .904 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see how manager Mike Scioscia splits up the P.T. at SS and 3B when Aybar is ready to return to action.

Howie Kendrick is off to a fast start for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 4 April 2011 at 2:30 pm

Starting 2B Howie Kendrick is off to a scorching start with the bat for the Angels. He has played in all four games for the Angels so far this year and he is 7 for 19 (.368 avg, 1.295 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 3 RBIs. Kendrick’s career high for homers in 10 which he did in both 2009 and 2010. The hot start doesn’t surprise me one bit as I have always thought Kendrick was a good hitter, he just has problems staying healthy.

The Los Angeles Angels better think hard about keeping Mike Napoli

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 21 September 2010 at 12:22 pm

Rumors abound that 28-year old righty swinging C/1B Mike Napoli will be on the trading block over the winter. I think they should keep Napoli based on the fact that Jeff Mathis, Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger have not proven that they can hit at the major league level. I know that it wasn’t fair for me to throw Conger in that mix as he just got called up this month. Napoli has played in 129 games for the Angels this year and he is 103 of 422 (.244 avg, .805 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 25 homers, 66 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He does have some holes in his swing as he has whiffed 125 times this year but that’s the price you pay for his power. This is the third year in a row that Napoli has hit 20+ homers and catchers that can hit like that don’t grow on trees.

Mike Napoli has been solid for the Los Angeles Angels this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 23 July 2010 at 2:06 pm

28-year old righty swinging C/1B Mike Napoli is having a solid year for the Angels. He started out the season behind the plate but he moved to 1B when Jeff Mathis came off the D.L. and starting 1B Kendry Morales went down for the year with a broken ankle. Napoli has played in 87 games for the Angels this year and he is 74 of 284 (.261 avg, .837 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 18 homers and 44 RBIs. He’s still a free swinger though as he has 86 whiffs this year. Still, that’s nitpicking and that Angels won’t care how many times he strikes out as long as he’s productive. Napoli has career highs of 60 runs scored, 20 homers and 56 RBIs in his major league career and I look for him to set new marks in all three of those categories as long as he can stay healthy.

Torii Hunter is staying in L.A. to represent the Angels in the All-Star Game

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 5 July 2010 at 8:25 am

34-year old outfielder will be the only player on the Angels that won’t get the All-Star Break off as he has made the team. Hunter has played in 79 games for the Angels this season and he is 85 of 289 (.294 avg, .899 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 14 homers, 60 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. This will be Hunter’s 4th All-Star Game appearance and he certainly deserves it as his bat has been carrying the Angels’ offense. Don’t forget his outstanding glove work which could help the A.L. win the game next week.

UPDATE: (7/6/2010) - Jered Weaver has been selected to the American League All-Star team to replace C.C. Sabathia who won’t be able to pitch in the game. Weaver has started 17 games for the Angels this year and he is 8-3 with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. He has only given up 89 hits in 108 2/3 innings while whiffing a league leading 124 batters. Weaver finally gets his due as he deserved to be picked to the All-Star team initially as he has pitched better than Sabathia this year.

Howie Kendrick is putting up some solid numbers for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 26 June 2010 at 11:38 am

26-year old righty swinging 2B Howie Kendrick has been pretty solid for the Angels this year. Kendrick has played in 74 games for the Angels this season and he is 82 of 295 (.278 avg, .727 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 7 homers, 48 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Kendrick has been kind of brittle in his career so the Angels have their fingers crossed hoping he can stay healthy this year. In his previous four years with the Angels Kendrick has career highs of 105 games played, 61 runs scored, 10 homers, 61 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Kendrick is on pace to smash all of those numbers as long as he can stay in one piece.
