The Los Angeles Angels have designated 31-year old lefty starting pitcher David Huff for assignment.  Huff pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the Angels and he was 0-2 with a 11.81 ERA and a 2.81 WHIP.  He has given up 13 hits (4 homers) and 2 walks while whiffing 3 batters in his 5 1/3 innings for the Angels……as he was utterly terrible for them.  Huff has now pitched in 120 games (57 starts) in his first 8 years in the show and he is 25-30 with a 5.17 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.  The Angels have called up 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter to replace Huff on the active roster.  Achter pitched in 7 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Angels and he was 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 1-1 with a 5.05 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.

UPDATE:  (6/16/2016) – The Angels have outrighted David Huff to AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed Joe Smith on the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 32-year old righty reliever Joe Smith on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hamstring.  Smith has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 1-3 with 6 saves, a 3.91 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Smith has been pitching hurt the last couple of weeks, so the Angels were right to finally put him on the D.L.  25-year old righty reliever Mike Moran has been called back up to replace Smith in the bullpen.  Moran has pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Angels earlier this year and he is 1-1 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels place Nick Tropeano on the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 25-year old righty starting pitcher Nick Tropeano on the D.L.  Tropeano has pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.  He has worked 55 1/3 innings so far this year for the Angels and he has given up 58 hits (8 homers) and 28 walks while whiffing 54 batters.  He has now pitched in 18 games (17 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 6-4 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  This is a big blow to the Angels, as they don’t have much rotation depth in the organization.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 33-year old righty swinging catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.  He will miss the next 4-6 weeks for the Angels.  This is a bad break for both Soto and the Angels.  Soto has played in 20 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 17 for 60 (.283 avg, .822 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.  He was starting to take playing time away from 25-year old righty swinging Carlos Perez.  Perez has played in 24 games for the Angels so far this year and he is only 13 of 74 (.176 avg, .467 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Angels have called up 26-year old righty swinging catcher Jett Bandy to replace Soto on the roster.  Bandy came into this season as the Angels’ #27 prospect according to Baseball America.  Bandy has played in 24 games in AAA-ball this year for the Angels and he is 26 of 95 (.274 avg, .725 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 21 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Bandy has now played in 426 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 390 of 1,470 (.265 avg, .759 OPS) with 201 runs scored, 42 homers, 227 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  Bandy played in 2 games for the Angels last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 1 for 2 (.500 avg, 2.500 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI.  Bandy could take P.T. away from Perez, as he is a legit prospect.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 31-year old switch-hitting 2B/SS Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list due to a hamstring injury.  Pennington has played in 24 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 10 for 46 (.217 avg, .664 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs.  The Angels have called up 31-year old righty swinging infielder Gregorio Petit to replace Pennington on the active roster.  He has played in 17 games in AAA-ball so far this year for the Angels and he is 18 of 55 (.327 avg, .759 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Coming into this season, Petit had played in 82 games in his first four years in the show and he was 49 of 193 (.254 avg) with 27 runs scored, 2 homers and 15 RBIs.  Petit went 1 for 2 in his Angels’ debut last night.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Andrelton Simmons for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Monday 9 May 2016 at 6:10 pm

The Los Angeles Angels will likely be without 26-year old righty swinging starting SS Andrelton Simmons for an extended time as he needs surgery on his left thumb to repair torn ligaments.  Simmons has played in 31 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 25 of 114 (.219 avg, .526 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  Simmons was the big acquisition over the winter by the Angels, as he is the best defensive shortstop on the planet Earth right now.  So this is a huge blow to the Angels moving forward.   31-year old switch-hitting Cliff Pennington will likely get the first shot to start in place of Simmons at SS.  Pennington has played in 22 games for the Angels so far this year and he is only 7 of 40 (.175 avg, .592 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.
