The Los Angeles Angels will be without a couple of starting pitchers for a while

24-year old lefty Tyler Skaggs and 35-year old lefty C.J. Wilson won’t be ready to be in the Los Angeles Angels’  starting rotation when the 2016 season opens.  Skaggs could return as early as late April, as he continues to return from Tommy John surgery, which wiped out the entire 2014 season for him.  Skaggs pitched in 18 games (all starts) for the Angels in 2014 and he was 5-5 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  Wilson will be out indefinitely due to shoulder issues.  Wilson pitched in 21 games (all starts) for the Los Angeles Angels last year and he was 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.  Wilson has now pitched in 119 games (all starts) in his first four years with the Angels and he is 51-35 with a 3.87 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Wilson was an American League All-Star for the Angels in 2012.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 8 September 2013 at 6:37 am

26-year old righty swinging outfielder Peter Bourjos won’t be able to bat the rest of the 2013 season due to lingering discomfort in his right wrist.  He will be allowed to play defense and pinch run if needed.  Bourjos has played in 55 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 48 of 175 (.274 avg, .710 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 3 homers, 12 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  He has now played in 354 games in his first four years with the Angels and he is 258 of 1,026 (.251 avg, .704 OPS) with 144 runs scored, 24 homers, 89 RBIs and 41 stolen bases.  The Angels got a lot of younger outfielders to cover for Bourjos in CF the rest of the way in 2013.

UPDATE:  (9/9/2013) – The Angels will be without Peter Bourjos for the rest of the season, as he will have surgery tomorrow on his right wrist.

The Angels have placed 27-year old righty swinging 3B Chris Nelson on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right hamstring.  Nelson has played in 33 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 24 of 109 (.220 avg, .626 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers, 18 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  The Angels have called up 25-year old righty swinging 3B Luis Jimenez to replace Nelson on the active roster.  Jimenez played in 24 games earlier this year for the Angels and he was 16 of 69 (.232 avg, .539 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Kevin Jepsen for the rest of the 2013 season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 25 August 2013 at 7:27 am

The Angels have lost 29-year old righty reliever Kevin Jepsen for the rest of the 2013 season after he underwent an emergency appendectomy last night.  He pitched in 45 games (0 starts) for the Angels in 2013 and he was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  Jepsen has now pitched in 241 games (0 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 13-16 with 3 saves, a 4.34 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  The Angels should be o.k. the rest of the way without Jepsen, as he didn’t pitch that well for them in 2013.

The Los Angeles Angels place Howie Kendrick on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 11 August 2013 at 2:05 pm

The Angels have placed 30-year old righty swinging 2B Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 6th, due to a sprained left knee.  Kendrick has played in 108 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 126 of 419 (.301 avg, .778 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 11 homers, 47 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  The Angels will get a good look at 25-year old righty swinging Grant Green while Kendrick is out of action.  Green has played in 4 games for the Angels since coming over in the Alberto Callaspo deal with the A’s and he is 5 for 13 (.385 avg, .885 OPS) with 1 run scored.  The Angels hope that Kendrick only needs to miss a couple of weeks.

Albert Pujols is likely done for the 2013 season for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 28 July 2013 at 2:58 pm

33-year old righty swinging 1B Albert Pujols has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 27th, due to a left plantar fascia problem.  If he elects to have surgery (a distinct possibility), it will end his 2013 season.  Pujols has played in 99 games for the Angels this year and he is 101 of 391 (.258 avg, .767 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 17 homers, 64 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Pujols has now played in 253 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 274 of 998 (.275 avg, .823 OPS) with 134 runs scored, 47 homers, 169 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  27-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo will take over as the full-time 1B for the Angels now.  He has played in 102 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 98 of 392 (.250 avg, .786 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 22 homers, 60 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  With the way Pujols was running this year, I’m surprised he gutted it out this long.

The Los Angeles Angels place Peter Bourjos on the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels place Tommy Hanson on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Thursday 27 June 2013 at 11:32 am

The Angels have placed 26-year old righty starting pitcher Tommy Hanson on the 15-day disabled list due to a right forearm injury.  Hanson has pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 4-2 with a 5.10 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.  Hanson has given up 57 hits (9 homers) and 17 walks while whiffing 33 batters in his first 47 2/3 innings this year for the Angels.  Hanson started 3 games in June and he was 2-0 despite having a 7.43 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP.  The Angels shouldn’t rush Hanson back this time, as they don’t need him hurting himself upon his return to action.

The Los Angeles Angels place Jason Vargas on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 21 June 2013 at 5:19 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 30-year old lefty starting pitcher Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 18th due to a blood clot in his left arm.  Vargas has pitched in 14 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  31-year old righty Jerome Williams will likely replace Vargas in the starting rotation.  Williams started 7 games earlier this year for the Angels in which he was 4-2 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  Williams has now pitched in 18 games (7 starts) overall this year for the Angels and he is 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  The Angels have called up 29-year old righty Billy Buckner to replace Williams in the pen as the long man.  Buckner started 1 game earlier this year for the Angels and he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  He also pitched in 12 games (all starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 6-2 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  The Angels hope that Williams can step up and cushion the blow of Vargas’ loss, because he’s going to be out a while.
