The Los Angeles Angels have placed 33-year old righty swinging catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.  He will miss the next 4-6 weeks for the Angels.  This is a bad break for both Soto and the Angels.  Soto has played in 20 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 17 for 60 (.283 avg, .822 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.  He was starting to take playing time away from 25-year old righty swinging Carlos Perez.  Perez has played in 24 games for the Angels so far this year and he is only 13 of 74 (.176 avg, .467 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Angels have called up 26-year old righty swinging catcher Jett Bandy to replace Soto on the roster.  Bandy came into this season as the Angels’ #27 prospect according to Baseball America.  Bandy has played in 24 games in AAA-ball this year for the Angels and he is 26 of 95 (.274 avg, .725 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 21 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Bandy has now played in 426 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 390 of 1,470 (.265 avg, .759 OPS) with 201 runs scored, 42 homers, 227 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  Bandy played in 2 games for the Angels last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 1 for 2 (.500 avg, 2.500 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI.  Bandy could take P.T. away from Perez, as he is a legit prospect.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Andrelton Simmons for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Monday 9 May 2016 at 6:10 pm

The Los Angeles Angels will likely be without 26-year old righty swinging starting SS Andrelton Simmons for an extended time as he needs surgery on his left thumb to repair torn ligaments.  Simmons has played in 31 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 25 of 114 (.219 avg, .526 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  Simmons was the big acquisition over the winter by the Angels, as he is the best defensive shortstop on the planet Earth right now.  So this is a huge blow to the Angels moving forward.   31-year old switch-hitting Cliff Pennington will likely get the first shot to start in place of Simmons at SS.  Pennington has played in 22 games for the Angels so far this year and he is only 7 of 40 (.175 avg, .592 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels have suffered a huge blow as 27-year old righty starting pitcher Garrett Richards will miss the remainder of the 2016 season due to Tommy John surgery.  Richards pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Angels this year and he was 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 148 games (93 starts) in his first six years with the Angels and he is 40-32 with 2 saves, a 3.58 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.  28-year old righty reliever Cory Rasmus will take Richards’ spot tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Rasmus has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP.  Rasmus has started 7 games so far in his Major League career and he is 0-1 with a 2.86 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP.  How long Rasmus stays in the rotation likely depends on his performance.  Richards’ injury is a huge blow to the Angels’ playoff chances this year as he is clearly the best starting pitcher they have!

The Los Angeles Angels place Andrew Heaney on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Wednesday 6 April 2016 at 7:18 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 24-year old lefty starting pitcher Andrew Heaney on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left flexor muscle.  He lost last night against the Cubs, as he worked 6 innings in which he allowed 7 hits (2 homers), 4 runs (all earned) and he whiffed 7 batters.  He has now pitched in 26 games (24 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 6-8 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  The Angels hope that Heaney will only have to miss a couple of weeks.  25-year old righty starting pitcher Nick Tropeano is likely to replace Heaney in the starting rotation until he’s ready to return to action.  Tropeano pitched in 8 games (7 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 3-2 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 12 games (11 starts) in his first two years in the show and he is 4-5 with a 4.10 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.  The Angels are confident that Tropeano can do a decent job, but they hope they can get Heaney back soon….as he has the higher upside.
