29-year old righty swinging catcher Chris Iannetta missed half of last season due to injury, but, the Angels are hoping for him to have a full workload in 2013. Iannetta played in 79 games for the Angels last year and he was 53 of 221 (.240 avg, .730 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 9 homers, 26 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 537 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 389 of 1,650 (.236 avg, .780 OPS) with 223 runs scored, 72 homers, 262 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Iannetta can give the Angels solid power at the back end of the batting order if he can just stay healthy in 2013. He played in 78 games (71 starts) behind the plate last year and he had 2 errors and 8 passed balls. He threw out 13 of 59 (22%) runners trying to steal on him last year and pitchers had a 3.90 ERA with him behind the plate. 29-year old righty swinging John Hester, 24-year old switch-hitting Hank Conger and 32-year old switch-hitting Luke Carlin will duke it out in spring training for the right to back up Iannetta in 2013. Hester played in 38 games for the Angels last year and he was 18 of 85 (.212 avg, .617 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 4 RBIs. He has now played in 92 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 45 of 208 (.216 avg, .642 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 6 homers, 15 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Hester played in 38 games (27 starts) behind the plate for the Angels last year and he had 0 errors and 1 passed ball. He only threw out 3 of 33 (9.1%) base stealers, but pitchers had a 3.97 ERA with him behind the dish. Conger is the guy the Angels would like to step up. He played in 7 games for the Angels last year and he was 3 for 18 (.167 avg, .405 OPS) with 1 RBI. He also played in 67 games in AAA-ball last year for the Angels in which he was 78 of 264 (.295 avg, .821 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 10 homers, 42 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Conger has now played in 79 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 45 of 224 (.201 avg, .610 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 6 homers and 25 RBIs. Conger played in 7 games (6 starts) behind the plate last year and he had 1 error and 0 passed balls. Conger threw out 2 of 8 (25%) base stealers last year and Angels’ pitchers had a 4.75 ERA with him behind the dish. Carlin played in 4 games for the Indians last year and he was 3 for 14 (.214 avg, .500 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base. He also played in 62 games in AAA-ball for the Indians last year in which he was 52 of 206 (.252 avg, .703 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 3 homers and 27 RBIs. Carlin has now played in 56 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 25 of 140 (.179 avg, .549 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Carlin played in 4 games (3 starts) for the Indians last year and he had 1 passed ball. He didn’t throw out any of the three base stealers that challenged him and Indians’ pitchers had a 6.68 ERA with him behind the plate.

Vargas has now pitched in 150 games (130 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 42-50 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. This could turn out to be a good trade for both teams.

The Angels have signed 36-year old righty starting pitcher Brian Lawrence to a minor league deal. He didn’t pitch at all last year. He pitched in 7 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels in 2011 and he was 2-5 with a 8.07 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. Lawrence last pitched in the majors back in 2007 with the Mets. Lawrence has pitched in 168 games (152 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 50-63 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Lawrence will have to prove he’s healthy in the minors and pitch well before he will be even considered to get his major league career back going.

UPDATE: (12/22/2012) – The Angels have released Brian Lawrence.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed Josh Hamilton

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 13 December 2012 at 3:14 pm

The Angels have signed 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Josh Hamilton to a 5-year, $125 million dollar deal. Hamilton played in 148 games for the Rangers last year and he was 160 of 562 (.285 avg, .930 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 43 homers, 128 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He has now played in 737 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 858 of 2,825 (.304 avg, .913 OPS) with 471 runs scored, 161 homers, 553 RBIs and 43 stolen bases. Hamilton has been on five A.L. All-Star teams in a row, he has won three Silver Slugger Awards so far this year and he won the A.L. MVP Award in 2010. Hamilton played in 133 games for the Rangers in 2010 and he was 186 of 518 (.359 avg, 1.044 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 32 homers, 100 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Hamilton led the majors in both batting average (.359) and OPS (1.044) in 2010. This was an awesome move for the Angels as it helps them while hurting the rival Rangers, just like they did last year when they signed C.J. Wilson. The Angels now have extra position players to deal for pitching.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Joe Blanton

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 5 December 2012 at 11:12 pm

The Angels have signed 31-year old righty starting pitcher Joe Blanton to a 2-year, $15 million dollar deal with a club option for 2015. Blanton pitched in 31 games (30 starts) for the Dodgers and Phillies last year in which he was 10-13 with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. He has now pitched in 237 games (228 starts) in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 83-75 with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Blanton is a solid back end of the rotation pitcher. I like this pickup for the Angels as they didn’t have to break the bank for Blanton.

The Los Angeles Angels ink Sean Burnett

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 5 December 2012 at 5:31 pm

The Angels have signed 30-year old lefty reliever Sean Burnett to a 2-year deal with a club option for the 2015 season. Burnett pitched in 70 games (0 starts) for the Nationals last year and he was 1-2 with a 2.38 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has now pitched in 354 games (13 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 15-23 with 10 saves, a 3.58 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Burnett was by far the best lefty reliever on the free agent market, so this was a nice pickup for the Angels. Burnett will team with Scott Downs in the pen to make the Angels very tough on lefty hitters late in ball games in 2013 and beyond.
