Jered Weaver is running on fumes for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Tuesday 16 August 2016 at 9:10 am

It’s sad to watch 33-year old righty starting pitcher Jered Weaver pitch for the Los Angeles Angels.  He is a mere shadow of his former self as he can barely dent a couch with his fastball anymore.  He is trying to get by on pitching know how, but that will only get you so far.  He has played in 23 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 8-10 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  He has given up a whopping 164 hits (26 of which are homers) and 37 walks while whiffing 67 batters in his first 133 2/3 innings pitched this year.  So he isn’t missing many bats and opposing hitters are making consistently hard contact against him.  Weaver pitched well in April, but it has been downhill since then.  Since May 1st, Weaver has pitched in 19 games (all starts) for the Angels in which he is 5-10 with a 5.68 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.

Get a good look at Weaver the rest of the way this year Angels’ fans, because he is in the last year of a 5-year, $85 million dollar contract.  I don’t see the Angels bringing him back for the 2017 season.  Weaver has now pitched in 314 games (all starts) in his first 11 years with the Angels and he is 146-91 with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.  He was an All-Star three years in a row for the Angels, from 2010-2012.  In those three All-Star seasons, Weaver combined to pitched in 97 games (all starts) in which he was 51-25 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP!  He gave up 516 hits and 155 walks while whiffing 573 batters in his 648 2/3 innings pitched between 2010-2012 with the Angels!  Weaver led the American League in wins in both 2012 (20) and 2014 (18)!  Weaver is currently #2 in wins (146) in Angels’ franchise history!  He is also tied for #6 in games pitched (314), #2 in games started (314), #13 in ERA (3.53), #5 in WHIP (1.18), #3 in innings pitched (1,980 2/3), #3 in strikeouts (1,562), tied for #26 in complete games (14) and he is also tied for #13 in shutouts (8) in Angels’ history!
