The Los Angeles Angels have acquired 34-year old righty swinging SS Brendan Ryan from the Washington Nationals for cash considerations.  Ryan played in 21 games in AAA-ball for the Nationals this year and he was 20 for 76 (.263 avg, .686 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Ryan has played in 879 games in his first nine years in the majors and he is 603 of 2,578 (.234 avg, .610 OPS) with 303 runs scored, 19 homers, 203 RBIs and 67 stolen bases.  Ryan will share time with Cliff Pennington and Johnny Giavotella at 2B and SS.  Ryan is a whiz with the glove, but he isn’t much of a hitter.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Andrelton Simmons for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Monday 9 May 2016 at 6:10 pm

The Los Angeles Angels will likely be without 26-year old righty swinging starting SS Andrelton Simmons for an extended time as he needs surgery on his left thumb to repair torn ligaments.  Simmons has played in 31 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 25 of 114 (.219 avg, .526 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  Simmons was the big acquisition over the winter by the Angels, as he is the best defensive shortstop on the planet Earth right now.  So this is a huge blow to the Angels moving forward.   31-year old switch-hitting Cliff Pennington will likely get the first shot to start in place of Simmons at SS.  Pennington has played in 22 games for the Angels so far this year and he is only 7 of 40 (.175 avg, .592 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels activate Daniel Nava from the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have activated 33-year old switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Nava from the D.L.  Nava played in 3 games in A-ball on his rehab assignment and he was 1 for 9 (.111 avg, .311 OPS).  Nava played in 8 games earlier this year for the Angels and he was 4 for 14 (.286 avg, .619 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  The Angels have sent 24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Rafael Ortega to AAA.  Ortega played in 14 games for the Angels this year and he was 15 of 51 (.294 avg, .640 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Ortega has now played in 16 games in his first two years in the show and he is 17 of 55 (.309 avg, .686 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Ortega will get called back up the first time the Angels need an outfielder.

The Los Angeles Angels call up Javy Guerra

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 6 May 2016 at 4:23 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have called up 30-year old righty reliever Javy Guerra.  Guerra pitched in 10 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he is 1-0 with 4 saves, a 2.87 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Guerra has pitched in 146 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 6-9 with 30 saves, a 2.87 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  Guerra has always been a solid pitcher in the show, so I like this addition for the Angels.

UPDATE:  (5/13/2016) – The Angels have designated Javy Guerra for assignment.  He pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP.

UPDATE II:  (5/17/2016) – The Angels have outrighted Javy Guerra to AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Garrett Richards to Tommy John surgery

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 6 May 2016 at 2:36 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have suffered a huge blow as 27-year old righty starting pitcher Garrett Richards will miss the remainder of the 2016 season due to Tommy John surgery.  Richards pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Angels this year and he was 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 148 games (93 starts) in his first six years with the Angels and he is 40-32 with 2 saves, a 3.58 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.  28-year old righty reliever Cory Rasmus will take Richards’ spot tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Rasmus has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP.  Rasmus has started 7 games so far in his Major League career and he is 0-1 with a 2.86 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP.  How long Rasmus stays in the rotation likely depends on his performance.  Richards’ injury is a huge blow to the Angels’ playoff chances this year as he is clearly the best starting pitcher they have!

Sherman Johnson is raking in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Thursday 5 May 2016 at 11:29 am

25-year old lefty swinging infielder Sherman Johnson was not considered a top prospect coming into the 2016 for the Los Angeles Angels, but he is playing like one so far.  Johnson has played in 21 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Angels so far this year and he is 25 of 73 (.342 avg, 1.106 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 5 homers, 10 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Johnson has now played in 457 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 432 of 1,698 (.254 avg, .773 OPS) with 316 runs scored, 36 homers, 195 RBIs and 70 stolen bases.  If Johnson keeps raking like he is right now, he could get a shot with the Angels later in 2016, as they have had issues at 2B.

Mike Trout is on fire at the plate right now for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 5 May 2016 at 11:24 am

24-year old righty swinging CF Mike Trout started out kind of slow for him for the Los Angeles Angels early this year, but he’s in a zone right now.  In the last two weeks, Trout has played in 12 games in which he is 17 for 48 (.354 avg, 1.175 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers, 16 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Trout has now played in 28 games overall this year for the Angels and he is 33 of 104 (.317 avg, .996 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 7 homers, 22 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Trout has now played in 680 games in his first six years with the Angels and he is 777 of 2,552 (.304 avg, .957 OPS) with 493 runs scored, 146 homers, 419 RBIs and 115 stolen bases.  Despite only being 24 years old, Trout is the leader in Los Angeles Angels’ franchise history in OBP (.397), SLG (.560) and OPS (.957).  He is #32 in Angels’ history in games played with 680 of them.  He is also #18 in hits (777), #3 in batting average (.304), #13 in runs scored (493), tied for 16th in doubles (149 with Doug DeCinces), #8 in homers (146), #15 in RBIs (419), #11 in stolen bases (115) and he’s #11 in walks (376) in Angels’ history.  If he stays healthy, he will be the All-Time leader in a lot of these categories for the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels send Matt Shoemaker to AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP,The Minors by joelapinski on Sunday 1 May 2016 at 6:41 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have sent 29-year old righty starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker to AAA.  Shoemaker has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP.  He has given up 29 hits (6 homers) and he has walked 10 batters while whiffing 16 batters in his first 20 2/3 innings so far this year.  His 21 earned runs allowed leads the American League!  It looked like batters were running up to the plate to bat against Shoemaker.  The Angels have called up 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter to replace Shoemaker on the pitching staff.  Achter pitched in 1 game (0 starts) earlier this year for the Angels and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.00 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels place Craig Gentry on the D.L.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries,The Minors by joelapinski on Sunday 1 May 2016 at 6:32 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 32-year old righty swinging outfielder Craig Gentry on the 15-day day disabled list due to a lumbar spring strain.  Gentry has played in 14 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 5 for 34 (.147 avg, .413 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.  The Angels have called up 31-year old righty swinging outfielder Shane Robinson to replace him on the active roster.  Robinson will likely take over Gentry’s role as the Angels starting LF against lefty starting pitchers.  Robinson played in 16 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 19 of 62 (.306 avg, .719 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He has played in 315 games in his first six years in the show and he is 138 of 582 (.237 avg, .615 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 5 homers, 53 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Jered Weaver is getting by with smoke and mirrors for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by joelapinski on Saturday 30 April 2016 at 1:04 pm

33-year old righty starting pitcher Jered Weaver is getting by with smoke and mirrors for the Los Angeles Angels.  He has pitched in 4 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.  He has given up 26 hits (4 homers), 7 walks and he has whiffed 11 batters in his first 23 1/3 innings so far this year.  Weaver had a hard time last year for the Angels, working in 26 games (all starts) in which he was 7-12 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Weaver has now pitched in 295 games (all starts) in his first 11 years with the Angels and he is 141-81 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  He has been to three American League All-Star teams in his career with the Angels so far.  Weaver is second in Angels’ history in both games started (295) and wins (141).  He is also #9 in games pitched (295), #4 in WHIP (1.16), #4 in innings pitches (1,870 1/3 innings) and he is #3 in whiffs (1,506) in Angels’ history.  It will be interesting to see if Weaver can get by with throwing 83 mph “fastballs”.
