The Los Angeles Angels lose Kevin Jepsen for the rest of the 2013 season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 25 August 2013 at 7:27 am

The Angels have lost 29-year old righty reliever Kevin Jepsen for the rest of the 2013 season after he underwent an emergency appendectomy last night.  He pitched in 45 games (0 starts) for the Angels in 2013 and he was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  Jepsen has now pitched in 241 games (0 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 13-16 with 3 saves, a 4.34 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  The Angels should be o.k. the rest of the way without Jepsen, as he didn’t pitch that well for them in 2013.

The Los Angeles Angels DFA Billy Buckner

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 23 August 2013 at 6:08 pm

The Angels have designated 29-year old righty starter/reliever Billy Buckner for assignment.  Buckner pitched in 7 games (2 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 1-0 with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  He has also pitched in 16 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels so far this year in which he is 7-2 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.  Buckner has been a good sport for the Angels this year, as this is the 3rd time that they have DFA’d him so far in 2013.  He will likely accept another outright assignment to AAA if he clears waivers again (which is likely).

UPDATE:  (8./26/2013) - The Angels have outrighted Billy Bucker to AAA.

J.B. Shuck has been a pleasant surprise in 2013 for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by joelapinski on Wednesday 21 August 2013 at 7:57 am

26-year old lefty swinging outfielder J.B. The Los Angeles Angels place Howie Kendrick on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 11 August 2013 at 2:05 pm

The Angels have placed 30-year old righty swinging 2B Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 6th, due to a sprained left knee.  Kendrick has played in 108 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 126 of 419 (.301 avg, .778 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 11 homers, 47 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  The Angels will get a good look at 25-year old righty swinging Grant Green while Kendrick is out of action.  Green has played in 4 games for the Angels since coming over in the Alberto Callaspo deal with the A’s and he is 5 for 13 (.385 avg, .885 OPS) with 1 run scored.  The Angels hope that Kendrick only needs to miss a couple of weeks.

The Los Angeles Angels release Mitch Stetter

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 9 August 2013 at 5:22 am

The Angels have released 32-year old lefty reliever Mitch Stetter.  Stetter pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in Rookie+AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 3-1 with 3 saves, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.  Stetter last pitched in the majors in 2011 with the Brewers.  Stetter has pitched in 132 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 8-2 with 1 save, a 4.08 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Angels moving forward.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Tuesday 6 August 2013 at 6:22 pm

The Angels have released 32-year old righty reliever Ryan Madson.  Madson pitched in only 1 game out of the pen in A-ball this year for the Angels and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.00 WHIP.  Madson has pitched in 491 games (18 starts) in his first 9 years in the majors and he was 47-30 with 52 saves, a 3.59 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  This is not much of a loss for the Angels moving forward, as Madson was still struggling in his return from Tommy John Surgery.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Jason Urquidez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Monday 5 August 2013 at 1:18 pm

The Angels have signed 30-year old righty reliever Jason Urquidez to a minor league deal.  He pitched in 39 games (0 starts) in Independent ball earlier this year and he was 3-1 with 24 saves, a 0.25 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP.  He has only given up 19 hits and 7 walks in the minors this year while whiffing 48 batters in 36 innings, which was impressive.  Urquidez has now pitched in 287 games (3 starts) in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 30-17 with 35 saves, a 3.54 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  He could get his first shot at the show later this year if he looks good in the minors for the Angels.
