The Los Angeles Angels have designated 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter for assignment.  Achter has pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  Achter has now pitched in 30 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  It will be interesting to see if another team claims Achter this time around.

UPDATE:  (7/21/2016) – The Angels have outrighted A.J. Achter to AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels claim Sean Coyle off waivers from the Red Sox

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed 24-year old righty swinging 2B/3B Sean Coyle off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.  Coyle played in 64 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Red Sox this year and he was 36 of 218 (.165 avg, .543 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 5 homers, 14 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  He has now played in 498 games in his first seven years in the minors and he is 433 of 1,801 (.240 avg, .754 OPS) with 310 runs scored, 66 homers, 262 RBIs and 68 stolen bases.  This is just the Angels taking a flier on a young player.

The Los Angeles Angels activate Geovany Soto from the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have activated 33-year old righty swinging catcher Geovany Soto off the D.L.  Soto has played in 20 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 17 of 60 (.283 avg, .822 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.  To make room on the roster for Soto, the Angels have sent 25-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Perez to AAA.  Perez has played in 58 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 38 of 186 (.204 avg, .563 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 4 homers, 23 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Los Angeles Angels place C.J. Cron on the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 26-year old righty swinging 1B C.J. Cron on the 15-day disabled list due to a fractured left hand.  He was hit by a pitch last night.  Cron has played in 77 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 73 of 259 (.278 avg, .808 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Cron is currently #3 in both homers and RBIs on the Angels so far this year.  25-year old lefty swinging 1B Ji-Man Choi has been called up to replace Cron on the active roster.  Choi played in 14 games for the Angels earlier this year and he is 1 for 18 (.056 avg, .347 OPS).  Losing Cron is a huge blow to the Angels, as he has really been hitting well lately.

The Los Angeles Angels send Jose Alvarez to AAA

The Los Angeles Angels have sent 27-year old lefty reliever Jose Alvarez to AAA.  Alvarez has pitched in 40 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.  He has given up 47 hits and 12 walks while whiffing 35 batters in his first 37 innings for the Angels this year, so he was getting hit kind of hard.  He has now pitched in 106 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Angels and he is 5-5 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Alvarez’ roster spot was needed for today’s starting pitcher, Nick Tropeano.

The Los Angeles Angels are calling up 25-year old righty starting pitcher Nick Tropeano and he will rejoin the rotation and start tomorrow afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Tropeano has pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.  The Angels will move 28-year old righty Jhoulys Chacin to the pen to open up the rotation spot for Tropeano.  Chacin has pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-5 with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP.  He has given up 64 hits (5 homers) and 25 walks while whiffing 31 batters in his first 53 innings pitched for the Angels this year, so he was getting hit really, really hard!

The Los Angeles Angels have activated 32-year old righty reliever Joe Smith off the D.L.  Smith pitched in 26 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Angels and he was 1-3 with 6 saves, a 3.76 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  To make room for Smith on the active roster, the Angels have sent 25-year old righty reliever Mike Morin to AAA.  Morin has pitched in 35 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 4.93 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  Morin has now pitched in 142 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Angels and he is 9-7 with 1 save, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  Morin might be back with the Angels later this year.

The Los Angeles Angels have released 30-year old righty reliever David Carpenter.  Carpenter pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 1-1 with a 7.80 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP.  Carpenter has pitched in 218 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the show and he is 11-11 with 4 saves, a 3.66 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  This is no loss to the soon to be rebuilding Los Angeles Angels.

Achter back to AAA.  Achter has pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  He has given up 25 hits (5 homers) and 4 walks while whiffing 9 batters in 20 1/3 innings for the Angels this year.  Achter will likely be back later this year for the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels claim J.C. Ramirez off waivers from the Reds

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed 27-year old righty reliever J.C. Ramirez off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.  Ramirez pitched in 27 games (0 starts) for the Reds this year and he was 1-3 with 1 save, a 6.40 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  He gave up 35 hits (7 homers) and 9 walks while whiffing 28 batters in his 32 1/3 innings pitched for the Reds…so he got hit pretty hard.  Ramirez has now pitched in 65 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 2-6 with 1 save, a 6.41 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  This is a case of the Angels taking a flier on a pitcher with good stuff.
