The Los Angeles Angels release Quintin Berry

The Los Angeles Angels have released 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Quintin Berry.  Berry played in 100 games in AAA-ball for the Angels in 2016 and he was 93 of 345 (.270 avg, .672 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 1 homer, 32 RBIs and 35 stolen bases.  Berry has played in 125 games in his four years in the show and he is 80 of 302 (.265 avg, .704 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 3 homers, 33 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.  The Angels weren’t going to call Berry up any time soon, so they essentially did him a favor by letting him go right now.

The Los Angeles Angels send Ji-Man Choi to AAA

The Los Angeles Angels have sent 25-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF Ji-Man Choi to AAA.  Choi has played in 43 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 17 of 102 (.167 avg, .618 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers, 12 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Angels have called up 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter to replace Choi on the active roster.  Achter has pitched in 13 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Manny Banuelos

The Los Angeles Angels have signed 25-year old lefty starting pitcher Manny Banuelos to a minor league deal.  Banuelos came into this season as the Braves’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 14 games (all starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball for the Braves this year and he was 0-5 with a 5.33 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP.  He got his first taste of the majors in 2015 for the Braves, working in 7 games (6 starts) in which he was 1-4 with a 5.13 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.  This is a good guy for the Angels to take a flier on.

The Los Angeles Angels call up Kaleb Cowart

The Los Angeles Angels have called up 24-year old switch-hitting 3B Kaleb Cowart.  Cowart came into this season as the Los Angeles’ Angels’ #8 prospect according to Baseball America.  Cowart played in 3 games so far this year for the Angels and he is 1 for 6 (.167 avg, .333 OPS).  He also has played in 107 games in AAA-ball for the Angels this year in which he is 116 of 414 (.280 avg, .792 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 9 homers, 58 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  Cowart has played in 37 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 9 for 52 (.173 avg, .515 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Cowart will likely get a shot to start at 3B until Yunel Escobar comes off of the D.L.

The Los Angeles Angels have activated 26-year old righty swinging 1B C.J. Cron off of the 15-day disabled list.  He has played in 78 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 72 of 263 (.274 avg, .796 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  To make room on the active roster for Cron, the Angels have placed 33-year old righty swinging 3B Yunel Escobar on the 7-day concussion D.L.  Escobar has played in 110 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 140 of 438 (.320 avg, .769 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 3 homers and 34 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels have designated 29-year old righty swinging 2B Johnny Giavotella for assignment.  Gizvotella played in 99 games for the Angels this year and he was 90 for 346 (.260 avg, .662 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 6 homers, 31 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He played in 228 games in his two years with the Angels and he was 213 of 799 (.267 avg, .680 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 10 homers, 80 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  This was a surprising move for the Angels, as Giavotella will likely have little problem finding a new team.

The Los Angeles Angels have released 30-year old righty reliever Al Alburquerque.  He pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.  Alburquerque also pitched in 28 games (3 starts) in Rookie+AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 1-0 with 8 saves, a 3.25 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  Alburquerque has now pitched in 243 games (0 starts) in his first six years in the show and he is 17-6 with 1 save, a 3.21 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  He will have little trouble finding a new team to pitch for.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed 32-year old righty reliever Andrew Bailey to a minor league deal.  Bailey pitched in 33 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 3-1 with a 6.40 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  Bailey has given up 32 hits (6 homers) and 15 walks while whiffing 33 batters in his first 32 1/3 innings in the show this year.  Bailey has now pitched in 249 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the show and he is 14-14 with 89 saves, a 3.20 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.  This is just the case of the Angels taking a flier on a tw0 time American League All-Star (2009 and 2010 with the Oakland A’s).

The Los Angeles Angels have designated 24-year old righty swinging infielder Sean Coyle.  Coyle played in 21 games in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 11 for 78 (.141 avg, .520 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Coyle has played in AA+AAA-ball for the Angels and Red Sox so far this year and he is 47 of 296 (.159 avg, .537 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 7 homers, 20 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Coyle has now played in 519 games in his first seven years in the minors and he is 444 of 1,879 (.236 avg, .744 OPS) with 323 runs scored, 68 homers, 268 RBIs and 72 stolen bases.  This is no loss for the Angels moving forward.

UPDATE:  (8/21/2016) – The Angels have sent Sean Coyle outright to AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels claim Cody Ege off waivers

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed 25-year old lefty reliever Cody Ege on waivers from the Miami Marlins.  Ege pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this year in his first taste of the show and he was 0-0 with a 12.00 ERA and a 3.33 WHIP.  Ege gave up 8 hits (1 homer) and 2 walks while whiffing 2 batters in his first 3 innings in the show, so he got hit hard.  He also pitched in 36 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Marlins this year in which he was 4-3 with 5 saves, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.  Ege has now pitched in 138 games (0 starts) in the minors and he is 18-6 with 11 saves, a 2.63 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  This was a good guy for the Angels to take a flier on, as Ege has a good arm.
