The Los Angeles Angels send Matt Shoemaker to AAA

The Los Angeles Angels have sent 29-year old righty starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker to AAA.  Shoemaker has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP.  He has given up 29 hits (6 homers) and he has walked 10 batters while whiffing 16 batters in his first 20 2/3 innings so far this year.  His 21 earned runs allowed leads the American League!  It looked like batters were running up to the plate to bat against Shoemaker.  The Angels have called up 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter to replace Shoemaker on the pitching staff.  Achter pitched in 1 game (0 starts) earlier this year for the Angels and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.00 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 32-year old righty swinging outfielder Craig Gentry on the 15-day day disabled list due to a lumbar spring strain.  Gentry has played in 14 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 5 for 34 (.147 avg, .413 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.  The Angels have called up 31-year old righty swinging outfielder Shane Robinson to replace him on the active roster.  Robinson will likely take over Gentry’s role as the Angels starting LF against lefty starting pitchers.  Robinson played in 16 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 19 of 62 (.306 avg, .719 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He has played in 315 games in his first six years in the show and he is 138 of 582 (.237 avg, .615 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 5 homers, 53 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Nava on the 15-day disabled list due to left patella tendinitis.  He has played in 8 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 4 for 14 (.286 avg, .619 OPS) with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.  The Angels have called up 24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Rafael Ortega to replace Nava on the roster and as the lefty swinging portion of a platoon in LF.  Ortega came into this season as the Angels’ #18 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 6 games in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 8 for 23 (.348 avg, 1.012 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 triples, 1 homer and 7 RBIs.  Ortega played in 2 games in 2012 for the Colorado Rockies and he was 2 for 4 (.500 avg, 1.167 OPS) with 1 stolen base.  That was his only Major League experience until now.

The Los Angeles Angels have called up 23-year old lefty reliever Greg Mahle and they have sent 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter back to AAA.  Mahle came into this season as the Angels’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 1 game out of the pen in AAA this year for the Angels and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP.  Mahle pitched in 52 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball last year and he was 3-4 with 25 saves, a 3.26 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  Mahle has now pitched in 76 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 4-6 with 27 saves, a 2.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  Achter pitched in 1 game (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.00 WHIP.  Achter could get another shot with the Angels later this year.

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed 24-year old righty reliever Danny Reynolds off waivers from the Astros.  Reynolds pitched in 43 games (0 starts) in AA-ball for the Angels last year and he was 2-3 with 10 saves, a 4.57 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 152 games (42 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 22-23 with 21 saves, a 4.39 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  The Angels have sent him to AA to start the 2016 season.

The Los Angeles Angels send Cam Bedrosian to the minors

The Los Angeles Angels have sent 24-year old righty reliever Cam Bedrosian to the minors.  Bedrosian pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.  He worked 2 innings for the Angels and he was all over the place, as he walked 2 batters and threw 2 wild pitches.  The Angels called up 27-year old righty reliever A.J. Achter to replace Bedrosian in the bullpen.  Achter came into the game last night for the Angels and he threw a scoreless inning, allowing no baserunners and whiffing a batter.  Coming into this season, Achter had pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in his first two years in the majors and he was 1-1 with a 5.18 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed 36-year old lefty reliever Neal Cotts to a minor league deal.  Cotts pitched in 68 games (0 starts) for the Twins and Brewers last year and he was 1-0 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.  Cotts has now pitched in 483 games (5 starts) in his first 10 years in the show and he is 21-24 with 4 saves, a 3.96 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Cotts will more than likely be pitching for the Los Angeles Angels early on in the 2016 season.  I really like this pickup for them.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed 31-year old righty swinging outfielder Shane Robinson to a minor league deal.  Robinson played in 83 games for the Twins last year and he was 45 of 180 (.250 avg, .621 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 0 homers, 16 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  He has now played in 351 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 138 of 582 (.237 avg, .615 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 5 homers, 53 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.  Robinson will have to work his way to L.A. by playing well in AAA.

The Reds have offered Chris O’Grady back to the Los Angeles Angels

The Cincinnati Reds have offered 25-year old lefty reliever Chris O’Grady back to the Los Angeles Angels.  The Reds took him in the Rule 5 Draft.  O’Grady pitched in 45 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Angels last year and he was 0-5 with 4 saves, a 3.28 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 127 games (7 starts) in his first four years in the minors (all with the Angels) and he is 10-13 with 9 saves, a 3.21 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  The Angels have a weak farm system, so they should take O’Grady back from the Reds.

UPDATE:  (3/31/2016) – The Angels have accepted O’Grady back from the Reds.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Kyle Kendrick

The Los Angeles Angels have signed 31-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick to a minor league deal.  He pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the Braves in spring training and he was 0-2 with a 22.09 ERA and a 4.64 WHIP before being cut by them early.  He pitched in 27 games (all starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 7-13 with a 6.32 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 253 games (212 starts) in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 81-81 with a 4.63 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  If Kendrick makes a good early impression on the Angels, he could be starting with them in the near future.
