The Los Angeles Angels have placed 30-year old lefty starting pitcher Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 18th due to a blood clot in his left arm. Vargas has pitched in 14 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. 31-year old righty Jerome Williams will likely replace Vargas in the starting rotation. Williams started 7 games earlier this year for the Angels in which he was 4-2 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. Williams has now pitched in 18 games (7 starts) overall this year for the Angels and he is 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. The Angels have called up 29-year old righty Billy Buckner to replace Williams in the pen as the long man. Buckner started 1 game earlier this year for the Angels and he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 12 games (all starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 6-2 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. The Angels hope that Williams can step up and cushion the blow of Vargas’ loss, because he’s going to be out a while.
