The Los Angeles Angels have high expectations for Josh Hamilton in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by joelapinski on Thursday 28 February 2013 at 3:42 pm

The Angels stole 31-year old lefty swinging Josh Hamilton from the division rival Texas Rangers.  They have high expectations for him in 2013.  Hamilton played in 148 games for the Rangers last year and he was 160 of 562 (.285 avg, .930 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 42 homers, 128 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  He played in only 2 games in RF last year for the Rangers.  He did played in 84 games (52 starts) in LF last year and he had 3 assists and 3 errors there while showing off good range.  Hamilton should be an excellent defensive RF for the Angels.  He has now played in 737 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 858 of 2,825 (.304 avg, .913 OPS) with 471 runs scored, 161 homers, 553 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.  25-year old lefty swinging Kole Calhoun could win a bench job for the Angels this spring.  He played in 21 games for the Angels last year and he was 4 for 23 (.174 avg, .457 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base.  He played in 14 games (1 start) in RF for the Angels last year and he had 0 assists and 0 errors there while showing off outstanding range.  Calhoun also played in 105 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 122 of 410 (.298 avg, .877 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 14 homers, 73 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by joelapinski on Thursday 28 February 2013 at 3:36 pm

25-year old righty swinging Peter Bourjos will be the Angels’ starting CF in 2013.  He played in 101 games for the Angels last year and he was 37 of 168 (.220 avg, .606 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 3 homers, 19 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  He played in 90 games (48 starts) in CF for the Angels last year and he had 2 assists and 1 error there while showing off out of this world range.  Bourjos has now played in 299 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 210 of 851 (.247 avg, .703 OPS) with 118 runs scored, 21 homers, 77 RBIs and 35 stolen bases.  If anything happens to Bourjos and he has to miss a lot of time, Mike Trout would replace him in CF.  Trout played in 110 games (108 starts) for the Angels in CF last year and he had 2 assists and 2 errors there while showing off outstanding range there.  Josh Hamilton could also play some CF if needed.  He played in 95 games (84 starts) in CF last year for the Rangers and he had 2 assists and 4 errors there while showing poor range.  28-year old lefty swinging Scott Cousins could make the team as a backup outfielder this spring.  Cousins played in 53 games for the Marlins last year and he was 14 of 86 (.163 avg, .467 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 18 games (8 starts) in CF last year for the Marlins and he had 0 assists and o errors there while showing off outstanding range.  Cousins has now played in 128 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 32 of 175 (.183 avg, .523 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Mike Trout is sliding to LF for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by joelapinski on Thursday 28 February 2013 at 3:29 pm

Mark Trumbo will get most of his work at DH for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by joelapinski on Wednesday 20 February 2013 at 9:12 am

27-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo is going to get most of his ABs at DH in 2013.  He might switch with Albert Pujols and play 1B once in a while, but it won’t be much.  Trumbo is paid for his bat.  He played in 144 games for the Angels last year and he was 146 of 544 (.268 avg, .808 OPS) with 66 runs scored, 32 homers, 95 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He whiffed 153 times last year and he walked only 36 times, as he is a big time hacker.  Trumbo has now played in 301 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 284 of 1,098 (.259 avg, .780 OPS) with 133 runs scored, 61 homers, 184 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.  I think Trumbo will excel in his new role with the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Chad Cordero

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Thursday 14 February 2013 at 8:03 am

The Angels have signed 30-year old righty reliever Chad Cordero to a minor league deal.  Cordero did not pitch at all last year.  Cordero last pitched in the majors back in 2010 with the Seattle Mariners.  Cordero has pitched in 314 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 20-15 with 128 saves, a 2.89 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  He led the major leagues in saves back in 2005 with the Washington Nationals (47).  It never hurts to give a guy like Cordero a chance to see if he has anything left in the gas tank.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by joelapinski on Tuesday 12 February 2013 at 9:01 am

The Angels are hoping that 29-year old switch-hitting Erick Aybar can play better than he did in 2012 in 2013.  Aybar played in 141 games for the Angels last year and he was 150 of 517 (.290 avg, .740 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 8 homers, 45 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.  He played in 139 games (137 starts) at SS for the Angels last year and he had 15 errors while showing off pretty good range.  Aybar has now played in 770 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 749 of 2,691 (.278 avg, .706 OPS) with 353 runs scored, 32 homers, 251 RBIs and 98 stolen bases.  27-year old lefty swinging Andrew Romine, 25-year old righty swinging Thomas Field and 32-year old switch-hitting Luis Rodriguez are going to duke it out for the backup infielder job this spring.  Only Romine played SS in the majors last year.  Romine played in 8 games (4 starts) for the Angels at SS last year and he had 1 error there while showing out of this world range.

The Angels expected a lot more out of 33-year old righty swinging 1B Albert Pujols than they got in 2012.  Pujols played in 154 games for the Angels last year and he was 173 of 607 (.285 avg, .859 OPS) with 85 runs scored, 30 homers, 105 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  He played in 120 games (118 starts) at 1B for the Angels last year and he had 7 errors.  Pujols has now played in 1,859 games in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 2,246 of 6,919 (.325 avg, 1.022 OPS) with 1,376 runs scored, 475 homers, 1,434 RBIs and 92 stolen bases.  The Angels hope that Pujols gets back to being the hitter that they thought they were getting when they signed him up as a free agent last winter.  27-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo is going to be the starting DH for the Angels in 2013, but he can switch with Pujols to give him a rest once in a while.  Trumbo played in 21 games (16 starts) for the Angels at 1B last year and he didn’t make any errors.
