The Los Angeles Angels shut down 1B C.J. Cron for the rest of 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 30 August 2012 at 8:14 am

22-year old righty swinging 1B C.J. Cron has been shut down for the rest of the season as he needs surgery to repair his labrum in his right shoulder. He injured it in high school and played his first two years as a pro with a bum shoulder. That makes the numbers he put up all the more impressive. Cron played in 129 games in A-ball this year for the Angels and he was 154 of 525 (.293 avg, .843 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 27 homers, 123 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Cron has now played in 163 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 198 of 668 (.296 avg, .877 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 40 homers, 164 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Cron came into this season as the Angels’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. Imagine what he’s going to do next year when he’s finally healthy.

24-year old righty swinging 3B Luis Jimenez came into this season as the Angels’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America. He has played in 114 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 142 of 452 (.314 avg, .835 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 14 homers, 78 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Jimenez has now played in 521 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 619 of 2,042 (.303 avg, .857 OPS) with 338 runs scored, 73 homers, 383 RBIs and 79 stolen bases. I look for Jimenez to be called up by the Angels at some point in September.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 25 August 2012 at 5:46 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have lost 37-year old lefty reliever Hisanori Takahashi on waivers to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in 42 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. Takahashi pitched in 156 games (12 starts) in his three years with the Angels and he was 14-12 with 10 saves, a 3.80 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. This could wind up hurting the Angels down the road, as Takahashi isn’t that bad of a pitcher.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2012 at 5:38 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have placed 25-year old righty swinging outfielder Peter Bourjos on the 15-day disabled list due to a sore right wrist. Bourjos has played in 88 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 37 of 163 (.227 avg, .612 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 3 homers, 19 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Angels will miss Bourjos’ defense and speed while he’s on the shelf. His injury will clear more P.T. for Vernon Wells.

He gave up 98 hits in only 77 innings in AAA-ball this year, so he wasn’t missing many bats. Pena has now pitched in 124 games (27 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 14-19 with 11 saves, a 4.11 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.

Kendry Morales has been hot with the bat lately for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 13 August 2012 at 8:47 am

29-year old switch-hitting DH Kendry Morales has been red hot at the plate lately. In all started on July 30th, when Morales cracked a homer from each side of the plate in the same inning in a win over the Rangers. Since July 30th, Morales has played in 11 games in which he is 16 of 44 (.364 avg) with 10 runs scored, 6 homers and 12 RBIs. Morales has now played in 94 games for the Angels overall this year and he is 94 of 334 (.281 avg, .787 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 15 homers and 51 RBIs. It looks as if Morales has finally shaken off the rust after missing a year and a half due to a severely broken ankle.

The Los Angeles Angels release Francisco Rodriguez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 8 August 2012 at 8:59 am

The Angels have released 29-year old righty reliever Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez pitched in 40 games (1 start) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 2-3 with a 6.35 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He gave up 57 hits and he walked 31 batters in only 51 innings pitched this year while whiffing 28. So he didn’t have much of a clue where the ball was going after he threw it. Rodriguez pitched in 53 games (0 starts) in two years with the Angels and he was 1-3 with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Rodriguez might get a shot with another team, but the Angels won’t miss him too much going forward.

Diaz has played in 44 games in his two years in the majors and he is 39 of 139 (.281 avg, .659 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 20 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Angels must feel comfortable with the catchers they currently have to let Diaz go. He should be able to find a new job soon.
