The Los Angeles Angels could be looking for a 3B in the trade market

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Sunday 29 July 2012 at 1:32 pm

The Angels made a big upgrade in getting Zack Greinke this weekend. The only area I could see the Angels looking for an upgrade could be at 3B. Alberto Callaspo is the starting there now. He has played in 82 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 67 of 267 (.251 avg, .691 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 7 homers and 32 RBIs. Callaspo has had a rough time so far in July though, as he has played in 22 games in which he is 17 of 74 (.230 avg, .665 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. The Angels have enough offense to carry Callaspo’s bat at 3B, but it wouldn’t hurt them to improve there for the rest of the 2012 season.

The Angels have activated 29-year old righty swinging catcher Chris Iannetta off the D.L. Iannetta played in 26 games earlier this year and he is 13 of 66 (.197 avg, .706 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers and 9 RBIs. The Angels have sent 28-year old righty swinging catcher John Hester to AAA. Hester played in 38 games for the Angels this year and he is 18 of 85 (.212 avg, .617 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 4 RBIs. Iannetta should be able to give the Angels some juice at the bottom on the batting order.

The Los Angeles Angels have place Erick Aybar on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 27 July 2012 at 9:51 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have placed switch-hitting starting SS Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22nd due to a non-displaced fracture of his right big toe. Aybar has played in 91 games for the Rays so far this year and he is 84 of 327 (.257 avg, .666 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 4 homers, 28 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Switch-hitting Maicer Izturis will take over as the starting SS until Aybar is ready to return to action. Izturis has played in 65 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 43 of 182 (.236 avg, .626 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 1 homer, 14 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. The Angels have called up 26-year old lefty swinging Andrew Romine to replace Izturis as the top backup infielder. Romine played in 4 games earlier this year for the Angels and he was 4 for 6 (.667 avg, 1.333 OPS) with 1 run scored.

The Los Angeles Angels have acquired Zack Greinke from the Brewers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Friday 27 July 2012 at 6:54 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have acquired 28-year old righty starting pitcher Zack Greinke from the Milwaukee Brewers for 22-year old righty swinging shortstop Jean Segura, 23-year old righty starting pitcher Ariel Pena and 23-year old righty starting pitcher John Hellweg. Greinke pitched in 21 games (all starts) for the Brewers so far this year and he was 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He has now pitched in 259 games (218 starts) in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 85-76 with 1 save, a 3.79 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.

Jean Segura came into this season as the Angels’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America. He played in 1 game for the Angels this year and he was 0 for 3 (.000 avg) with 2 whiffs. Segura also played in 94 games in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 110 of 374 (.294 avg, .749 OPS) with 50 runs scored, 7 homers, 40 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. Ariel Pena came into this season as the Angels’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America. Pena pitched in 19 games (all starts) in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 6-6 with a 2.99 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. John Hellweg came into this season as the Angels’ #4 prospect according to Baseball America. Hellweg pitched in 21 games (all starts) in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 5-10 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

The Angels went all-in on this deal. They can now trot out Jered Weaver, Zack Greinke, C.J. Wilson and Dan Haren as their top four starting pitchers. No team in the A.L. can match that!

The Los Angeles Angels are trying to add a big time starting pitcher

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were GM by chinmusic on Friday 27 July 2012 at 11:03 am

The Los Angeles Angels are focused in trading for another ace type starting pitcher before the July 31st trade deadline. Zack Greinke, Josh Johnson and James Shields are the top targets for the Angels, and they have the young players and prospects to make a deal happen. I think the Angels are going to get one of those three guys. If they miss out on them, look for them to turn their attention to Francisco Liriano, Paul Maholm or Ryan Dempster. Make no mistake though, the Angels are going to be really busy at the trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Angels release Trevor Bell

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 26 July 2012 at 5:28 pm

The Angels have released 25-year old righty reliever/starter Trevor Bell. Bell pitched in 13 games (all starts) in Rookie+AAA-ball this year and he was 1-6 with a 7.03 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP. He gave up 73 hits and he walked 27 batters in only 48 2/3 innings in the minors this year for the Angels, so he was terrible. Bell pitched in 52 games (11 starts) in his three years with the Angels and he was 4-8 with a 5.21 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. Some team will pick up Bell relatively soon, but the Angels won’t miss him one bit.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 24 July 2012 at 10:34 am

32-year old righty swinging 1B Albert Pujols is ripping the ball so far in July for the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols has played in 19 games for the Angels so far this month and he is 23 of 71 (.324 avg, 1.041 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 6 homers, 14 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 96 games overall this year and he is 104 of 372 (.280 avg, .837 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 18 homers, 61 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Pujols is starting to see pitchers for the second and third times now, so he knows the tricks. I look for him to continue ripping the baseball the rest of this season.

The Los Angeles Angels acquire Barry Enright from the Diamondbacks

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Tuesday 24 July 2012 at 8:38 am

The Angels have acquired 26-year old righty starting pitcher Barry Enright from the Diamondbacks for a player to be named later or cash. Enright has pitched in 21 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the D-Backs this year and he is 8-6 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. He has pitched in 24 games (all starts) in his first two years in the majors and he is 7-11 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. This was a good pickup for the Angels as they will likely stash him in AAA-ball for now.

Eric Hurley opts to become a free agent, leaving the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 21 July 2012 at 9:01 am

26-year old righty starting pitcher Eric Hurley has opted out of his minor league contract to become a free agent. He pitched in 18 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 7-8 with a 5.81 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Hurley has only five games (all starts) of major league experience which came in 2008 with the Texas Rangers. He was 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in those game. The Angels aren’t going to miss him one bit moving forward.

Peter Bourjos is going to be prime trade bait for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 19 July 2012 at 3:07 pm

Once the Angels decide what they need to do in the trade market, they are likely going to dangle 25-year old righty swinging CF Peter Bourjos to those teams. With Mike Trout entrenched as the starting CF for the Angels, so they won’t likely miss Bourjos too much. Bourjos has played in 69 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 33 for 136 (.243 avg, .658 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 3 homers, 19 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 267 games in his first three years with the Angels and he is 206 of 819 (.252 avg, .715 OPS) with 108 runs scored, 21 homers, 77 RBIs and 34 stolen bases. Bourjos’ speed and outstanding defense is going to entice some teams to attempt to make a deal for him.
