The Los Angeles Angels only really have one need right now moving forward

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were GM by chinmusic on Thursday 28 June 2012 at 1:10 pm

As of right now, the Angels are 42-33, which has them in second place in the A.L. West….4.5 games behind the Texas Rangers. Looking at the roster, the only really upgrade I see the Angels needing is at 3B. No big time 3B are on the free agent market, so I could see them making a small deal for a righty swinger to platoon with lefty swinging Alberto Callaspo at the hot corner. Brandon Inge and Chris Johnson would likely cost the most of the available 3B. If the Angels want to aim lower, they could bring back Chone Figgins or deal for Danny Valencia or Jeff Baker. I like the idea of Valencia or Baker, as they wouldn’t cost much while providing some thump against lefty pitching on the cheap.

The Los Angeles Angels release Ysmael Carmona

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 28 June 2012 at 7:39 am

The Angels have released 27-year old righty reliever Ysmael Carmona. Carmona pitched in 4 games (0 starts) in AA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. He has now pitched in 143 games (1 start) in his first five years in the minors and he is 7-16 with 34 saves, a 4.90 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. This is no loss for the Angels.

Jason Isringhausen has been looking good for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 23 June 2012 at 8:12 am

39-year old righty reliever Jason Isringhausen is proving that he still has a lot left in the gas tank this year. He has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) so far in June and he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.55 WHIP. Isringhausen gave up only 2 hits in his first 7 1/3 innings this month, which is pretty darn impressive. He has now pitched in 27 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Isringhausen is tied for 22nd in major league history with Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter with 300 career saves, which is pretty impressive. The Angels hope that Isringhausen keeps up the good work out of the pen in 2012.

The Los Angeles Angels place Jerome Williams on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 21 June 2012 at 10:35 am

The Angels have placed 30-year old righty starting pitcher Jerome Williams on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 19th due to asthma and anxiety issues. Williams has pitched in 13 games (12 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 6-5 with a 4.46 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He has now pitched in 23 games (18 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 10-5 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Williams could wind up losing his starting job to Garrett Richards while he’s out of action.

Ryan Brasier is looking solid in AAA-ball for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 20 June 2012 at 10:05 am

24-year old righty reliever Ryan Brasier came into this season as the Angels’ #29 prospect according to Baseball America. Brasier has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-0 with 8 saves, a 3.62 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. He has now pitched in 194 games (37 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 21-24 with 49 saves, a 4.23 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Brasier might get a chance with the Angels at some point in 2012 if he keeps pitching well in AAA-ball.

The Los Angeles Angels DFA David Pauley

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 19 June 2012 at 11:54 am

The Angels have designated 28-year old righty reliever David Pauley for assignment. Pauley pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. He has now pitched in 86 games (20 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 9-19 with a 4.51 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. This isn’t much of a loss for the Angels as they are loaded in the bullpen.

UPDATE: (6/20/2012) - The Angels have lost David Pauley on waivers to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Garrett Richards has been lights out for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 18 June 2012 at 9:27 am

24-year old righty starting pitcher Garrett Richards came into this season as the Angels’ #3 prospect according to Baseball America, and he’s showing why. Richards has pitched in 4 games (3 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Richards has only given up 13 hits in his first 21 innings for the Angels, while whiffing 17 batters, which is impressive. But, Richards has also walked 11 batters, so he needs to tighten up his control a bit. It will be interesting to see what the Angels do when Jered Weaver returns from the D.L. If Mike Scioscia decides to keep Richards in the starting rotation, Ervin Santana or Jerome Williams will be shifting to the bullpen. Williams has outpitched Santana so far this year, but he makes nowhere near the same kind of money.

Albert Pujols is starting to heat up for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 14 June 2012 at 11:45 am

Albert Pujols is starting to heat up along with the weather. He played in 23 games in April for the Angels and he was only 20 for 92 (.217 avg, .570 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 0 homers and 4 RBIs. So far in May & June, Pujols has played in 40 games in which he is 46 for 158 (.291 avg) with 22 runs scored, 9 homers, 33 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Pujols has now played in 63 games for the Angels and he is 66 for 250 (.264 avg, .759 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 9 homers, 37 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Angels need Pujols to stay hot to help them catch the Rangers in the A.L. West.

Torii Hunter is really hitting the ball well in June for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 14 June 2012 at 11:29 am

36-year old righty swinging outfielder Torii Hunter has gotten hot so far in June. He has played in 11 games so far in June and he is 14 for 44 (.318 avg, 1.025 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 4 homers, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Hunter has now played in 46 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 46 for 170 (.271 avg, .806 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 9 homers, 25 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Angels have gotten hot right along with Hunter, so they need him to keep swinging a hot stick.

Erick Aybar has been pretty lousy with a bat in his hands so far this year for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Friday 8 June 2012 at 10:22 am

28-year old switch-hitting SS Erick Aybar played in 143 games for the Angels last year and he was 155 of 556 (.279 avg, .743 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 10 homers, 59 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He also won a Gold Glove (the first of his career last year). The Angels then rewarded Aybar with a 5-year, $40.08 million dollar deal over the winter. He has been awful so far this year. Aybar has played in 55 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 43 of 196 (.219 avg, .534 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 0 homers, 13 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He has now played in 684 games in his first seven years with the Angels and he is 642 of 2,370 (.271 avg, .685 OPS) with 301 runs scored, 24 homers, 219 RBIs and 83 stolen bases. The Angels need Aybar to get going at the plate, or this is going to start looking like a horrible contract they signed him to.
