The Los Angeles Angels release infielder Jorge Cantu

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 30 April 2012 at 2:16 pm

The Angels have released 30-year old righty swinging 1B/3B Jorge Cantu, as he exercised his opt out clause in his contract. Cantu played in 21 games in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 25 of 86 (.291 avg, .788 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 4 homers and 22 RBIs. Cantu has played in 847 games in 8 years in the majors and he is 847 for 3,128 (.271 avg, .755 OPS) with 367 runs scored, 104 homers, 476 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. The Angels aren’t going to miss Cantu this year. I do think another team will sign him to a minor league deal soon as he was hitting the ball well in AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels call up Mike Trout

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 28 April 2012 at 7:21 am

The Angels have called up 20-year old righty swinging outfielder Mike Trout. He is likely going to be the starting CF for the Angels. Trout played in 20 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 31 of 77 (.403 avg, 1.091 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 1 homer, 13 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Trout struggled last season in his first shot at the show, when he played in 40 games for the Angels in which he was 27 of 123 (.220 avg, .672 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 5 homers, 16 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. His P.T. was sporadic last year, but the Angels are planning on playing him every day this time around to see if he can give the offense a boost. 25-year old righty swinging Peter Bourjos will likely be the #4 outfielder now that he won’t be starting in CF. He has played in 16 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 8 for 45 (.178 avg, .512 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base. I think Bourjos will do a good job in his new role.

The Los Angeles Angels release DH/OF Bobby Abreu

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 28 April 2012 at 7:15 am

The Los Angeles Angels have released 38-year old lefty swinging DH/OF Bobby Abreu. Abreu played in 8 games for the Angels this year and he was 5 for 24 (.208 avg, .593 OPS) with 1 run scored, 0 homers and 5 RBIs. He played in 456 games in his four years with the Angels and he was 443 of 1,662 (.267 avg, .776 OPS) with 239 runs scored, 43 homers, 246 RBIs and 75 stolen bases. The Angels aren’t going to miss Abreu too much as they were having problems finding him ABs. He has also started to slide production wise. I have a feeling that some team is going to pick him up in 2012.

C.J. Wilson is looking sharp so far for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 27 April 2012 at 8:08 am

On the same day that the Angels signed 1B Albert Pujols, they also inked 31-year old lefty starter C.J. Wilson and that is proving to be money well spent. Wilson has started 4 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-2 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He has only given up 17 hits in 26 innings so far this year for the Angels, while whiffing 26 batters. Wilson has now pitched in 71 games (all starts) in his last three years and he is 33-17 with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. The Angels expect Wilson to keep up the good work going forward.

The Los Angeles Angels sign catcher John Hester

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 25 April 2012 at 8:13 am

The Angels have signed 28-year old righty swinging catcher John Hester to a minor league deal. Hester played in 10 games in AAA-ball earlier this year for the Orioles and he was 9 for 34 (.265 avg, .813 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI. He made his debut recently in Salt Lake City (AAA) for the Angels and he was 0 for 1 with a whiff. Hester last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Diamondbacks. He has played in 53 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 27 for 123 (.220 avg, .660 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

Leon Wagner was a solid outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Blast from the Past, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 23 April 2012 at 1:44 pm

Lefty swinging LF/RF Leon Wagner was only with the Angels for three short seasons early on in their existence, but he made his mark. Wagner played in 442 games in his three years with the Angels and he was 451 of 1,615 (.279 avg, .831 OPS) with 243 runs scored, 91 homers, 276 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. His best year came back in 1962 with the Angels. Wagner played in 160 games for the Angels in 1962 and he was 164 of 612 (.268 avg, .826 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 37 homers, 107 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Wagner was an American League All-Star in 1962 and he finished 4th in the voting for the A.L. MVP Award. Wagner’s 37 homers in 1962 tie him with Bobby Bonds for the 5th highest one year total in Angels’ history.

Mark Trumbo is having a hard time finding ABs for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 23 April 2012 at 1:41 pm

26-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo broke out for the Angels in 2011. He played in 149 games for the Angels last year and he was 137 of 539 (.254 avg, .768 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 29 homers, 87 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. He is a natural 1B, but he can’t play there with Albert Pujols locked in. So he tried to learn 3B in spring training, but that has not gone too well as he has made 3 errors in his first four games there. With Kendry Morales back at DH, it’s been really hard for manager Mike Scioscia to find ABs for him. That’s a shame because he’s raking at the plate so far this year. He has played in 10 games for he Angels so far this year and he is 10 for 30 (.333 avg, .978 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and 1 stolen base. I think the Scioscia will find a way to get Trumbo ABs if he keeps hitting like he is right now.

LaTroy Hawkins is looking good for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 20 April 2012 at 11:11 am

39-year old righty reliever LaTroy Hawkins has looked really good for the Angels so far this year. He has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Hawkins has been a solid reliever for a long time in his career now. He came up to the Twins as a starting pitcher, which is a role that he failed miserably at. He has started 98 games in his major league career in which he is 26-44 with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. The Twins decided to move him to the bullpen to try to save his career and he excelled in his new role. He has pitched in 730 games in relief in his major league career now and he is 37-41 with 87 saves, a 3.32 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. I see no reason to think that Hawkins won’t continue to pitch great baseball out of the pen for the Angels in 2012 as long as he can stay healthy.

Garrett Richards is off to a good start in AAA-ball for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 April 2012 at 2:23 pm

23-year old righty starting pitcher Garrett Richards came into this season as the Angels’ #3 prospect according to Baseball America. Richards had a rough into to the majors last year when he pitched in 7 games (3 starts) in which he was 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. But, he looks pretty good so far in AAA ball this year. He has pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP. He has only given up 12 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 21 batters in his first 21 innings so far this year. Whether Richards gets another shot at the rotation this year will likely depend on how well Jerome Williams pitches as he is the #5 starter for the Angels right now. I think Richards will pitch better in 2012 for the Angels, if he gets that chance at some point in the year.

Mike Trout is killing the ball in AAA for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 April 2012 at 2:17 pm

20-year old righty swinging outfielder Mike Trout came into this season as the Angels’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America. He has a rough time in his first taste of the majors last year when he played in 40 games in which he was 27 for 123 (.220 avg, .671 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 5 homers, 16 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Trout is trying to get back to the majors in 2012, but he will need an injury to one of the Angels’ starting outfielders to likely get than chance. Trout has played in 12 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 21 of 50 (.420 avg, 1.094 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 3 triples, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. I think Trout will be much better the next time around in the majors, especially if he gets consistent playing time.
