The Angels are going to try to make 26-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo their new 3B this spring to get his bat in the lineup. Trumbo played in 149 games for the Angels last year and he was 137 of 539 (.254 avg, .768 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 29 homers, 97 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. He has now played in 157 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 138 of 554 (.249 avg, .753 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 29 homers, 89 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Trumbo had 10 errors in 149 games at 1B last year for the Angels. He is likely not going to be a good defensive 3B, but his bat will likely more than make up for it.
28-year old switch-hitting Alberto Callaspo isn’t going to give up his starting job without a fight this spring. Callaspo played in 141 games for the Angels last year and he was 137 of 475 (.288 avg, .740 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 6 homers, 46 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has now played in 199 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 190 of 688 (.276 avg, .699 OPS) with 75 runs scored, 8 homers, 59 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Callaspo has now played in 595 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 565 of 2,012 (.281 avg, .725 OPS) with 227 runs scored, 27 homers, 204 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. He had 15 errors in 129 games at 3B last year for the Angels while showing outstanding range. The Angels will likely look to deal Callaspo is Mark Trumbo can handle playing 3B.
31-year old Maicer Izturis also can handle playing 3B. He played in 37 games at 3B for the Angels last year and he had 3 errors while showing slightly below average range at the hot corner.
