The over/under for Los Angeles Angels wins in 2012 is 91.5

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were A Betting Man by chinmusic on Friday 30 March 2012 at 7:39 pm

The over/under for Angels wins in 2012 is 91.5. The Angels were 86-76 last year. The Angels snapped up 1B Albert Pujols and lefty starting pitcher C.J. Wilson on the same day over the winter. To me, that made them the favorites in the A.L. West and maybe the entire American League. The Angels also brought in catcher Chris Iannetta and relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Jason Isringhausen. I think the Angels are the team to beat in the American League, so I would take the over.

Mike Scioscia is a rock in the dugout for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Friday 30 March 2012 at 7:37 pm

54-year old manager Mike Scioscia is one of the best managers in all of baseball and the Angels are happy to have him. The Angels were 86-76 (53.1%) last year and they missed the playoffs. So, owner Arte Moreno opened up the check book and brought in reinforcements to give Scioscia the improved roster he really needs to challenge the Rangers in the A.L. West. Scioscia now has a 1,066-878 (54.8%) record in his first 12 years in charge in the regular season for the Angels. He is also 21-24 (46.7%) in the post-season and he helped lead the Angels to a World Series Championship back in 2002.

The Los Angeles Angels sign David Pauley

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 24 March 2012 at 10:36 am

The Angels have signed 28-year old righty reliever David Pauley to a minor league deal. Pauley pitched in 53 games (0 starts) for the Tigers & Mariners last year and he was 5-6 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He has now pitched in 81 games (20 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 9-18 with a 4.52 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Pauley will likely get his shot at some point in 2012 with the Angels for a shot to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke.

The Los Angeles Angels expect a big year out of Torii Hunter in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 5:19 pm

36-year old righty swinging RF Torii Hunter will likely see a lot of good pitches in 2012 as he will likely be batting in front of Albert Pujols. Hunter played in 156 games for the Angels last year and he was 152 of 580 (.262 avg, .765 OPS) with 80 runs scored, 23 homers, 82 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He has now played in 573 games in his first four years with the Angels and he is 601 of 2,155 (.279 avg, .814 OPS) with 315 runs scored, 89 homers, 340 RBIs and 51 stolen bases. Hunter has now played in 1,807 games in his first 15 years in the NFL and he is 1,819 of 6,647 (.274 avg, .800 OPS) with 987 runs scored, 281 homers, 1,051 RBIs and 177 stolen bases. Hunter played in 136 games in RF for the Angels last year and he had 15 assists and 3 errors while showing good range there.

If Hunter were to get hurt, the Angels would likely call up Mike Trout to replace him. Trout played in 13 games in RF for the Angels last year and had 1 error there while showing terrible range.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE RF IN 2012: B+

The Los Angeles Angels are hoping for another decent year out of Peter Bourjos in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 5:11 pm

25-year old righty swinging Peter Bourjos will be the starting CF in 2012 once again. Bourjos played in 147 games for the Angels last year and he was 136 of 502 (.271 avg, .765 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 12 homers, 43 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. He has now played in 198 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 173 of 683 (.253 avg, .727 OPS) with 91 runs scored, 18 homers, 58 RBIs and 32 stolen bases. Bourjos played in 147 games in CF last year for the Angels and he had 7 assists and 4 errors. Despite making some outstanding plays in CF last year, he showed below average range overall.

20-year old righty swinging Mike Trout could replace Bourjos at some point in 2012. Trout played in 40 games for the Angels last year and he was 27 of 123 (.220 avg, .672 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 5 homers, 16 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He also played in 91 games in AA-ball last year and he was 115 of 353 (.326 avg, .958 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 11 homers, 38 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. Trout played in 13 games in CF last year and he had 1 error while showing out of this world range. Trout is the Angels’ best prospect and he could be knocking on the door in 2012.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE CF IN 2012: B

The Los Angeles Angels hope that Vernon Wells steps up in 2012

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 5:05 pm

33-year old righty swinging Vernon Wells had a rough time in 2011. Wells played in 131 games for the Angels last year and he was 110 of 505 (.218 avg, .660 OPS) with 60 runs scored, 25 homers, 66 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,524 games in his first 13 years in the majors and he is 1,639 of 6,492 (.274 avg, .792 OPS) with 849 runs scored, 248 homers, 879 RBIs and 99 stolen bases. Wells played in 111 games in LF last year for the Angels and he had 4 assists and 3 errors while showing outstanding range.

If Wells gets injured, the Angels will likely call up 20-year old righty swinging Mike Trout. Trout played in 10 error-free games in LF last year for the Angels while showing out of this world range there.

Mark Trumbo or Maicer Izturis could also see some time in LF in 2012 if Wells needs a day off once in a while.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE LF IN 2012: B

The Los Angeles Angels lose Jeremy Moore for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 4:59 pm

The Angels will be without 24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jeremy Moore for the next 3-5 months due to hip surgery. Moore comes into this season as the Angels’ #11 prospect according to Baseball America. Moore played in 8 games for the Angels last year and he was 1 for 8 (.125 avg, .250 OPS) with 3 runs scored. He also played in 113 games in AAA-ball for the Angels last year and he was 127 of 426 (.298 avg, .876 OPS) with 76 runs scored, 15 homers, 66 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. Moore has played in 611 games in his first 7 years in the minors and he is 620 of 2,241 (.277 avg, .803 OPS) with 351 runs scored, 75 homers, 327 RBIs and 124 stolen bases. This is a bad break for Moore as he was likely going to have a good shot to make the team this spring.

The Los Angeles Angels have a few choices at DH for 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by admin on Friday 9 March 2012 at 5:13 pm

The Angels will likely go with 28-year old switch-hitting Kendry Morales as the starting DH in 2012 if he’s healthy.  He missed the entire 2011 season as he continues to recover from a badly broken ankle.  His big year in 2009 showed what he can do when healthy.  He played in 152 games for the Angels in 2009 and he was 173 of 566 (.306 avg, .924 OPS) with 86 runs scored, 34 homers, 108 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Morales has now played in 330 games in his first six years with the Angels and he is 323 of 1,136 (.306 avg, .924 OPS) with 155 runs scored, 57 homers, 192 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Morales will be the starting DH for the Angels if he can get healthy.

37-year old lefty swinging Bobby Abreu looked his age last year for the Angels.  He played in 142 games for the Angels last year and he was 127 of 502 (.253 avg, .717 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 8 homers, 60 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.  Abreu has played in 448 games in his first three years with the Angels and he is 438 of 1,638 (.267 avg, .779 OPS) with 238 runs scored, 43 homers, 241 RBIs and 75 stolen bases.  Abreu has now played in 2,247 games in his first 16 years in the majors and he is 2,384 of 8,128 (.293 avg, .878 OPS) with 1,412 runs scored, 284 homers, 1,325 RBIs and 393 stolen bases.  The Angels are likely going to try to deal Abreu before opening day.

If Morales isn’t healthy on opening day, Mark Trumbo could be the starting DH.  He has a lot of power and could excel in that role.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE DH IN 2012:  B

The Los Angeles Angels are looking to make Mark Trumbo a 3B this spring

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by admin on Friday 9 March 2012 at 5:02 pm

The Angels are going to try to make 26-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo their new 3B this spring to get his bat in the lineup.  Trumbo played in 149 games for the Angels last year and he was 137 of 539 (.254 avg, .768 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 29 homers, 97 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  He has now played in 157 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 138 of 554 (.249 avg, .753 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 29 homers, 89 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  Trumbo had 10 errors in 149 games at 1B last year for the Angels.  He is likely not going to be a good defensive 3B, but his bat will likely more than make up for it.

28-year old switch-hitting Alberto Callaspo isn’t going to give up his starting job without a fight this spring.  Callaspo played in 141 games for the Angels last year and he was 137 of 475 (.288 avg, .740 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 6 homers, 46 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  He has now played in 199 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 190 of 688 (.276 avg, .699 OPS) with 75 runs scored, 8 homers, 59 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.  Callaspo has now played in 595 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 565 of 2,012 (.281 avg, .725 OPS) with 227 runs scored, 27 homers, 204 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  He had 15 errors in 129 games at 3B last year for the Angels while showing outstanding range.  The Angels will likely look to deal Callaspo is Mark Trumbo can handle playing 3B.

31-year old Maicer Izturis also can handle playing 3B.  He played in 37 games at 3B for the Angels last year and he had 3 errors while showing slightly below average range at the hot corner.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE 3B IN 2012:  B

The Los Angeles Angels have high hopes for Erick Aybar in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Saturday 3 March 2012 at 9:04 pm

28-year old switch-hitting Erick Aybar had his best season in 2011 and the Angels are hoping for more out of him in 2012. Aybar played in 143 games for the Angels last year and he was 155 of 556 (.279 avg, .743 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 10 homers, 59 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He has now played in 629 games in his first six years with the Angels and he is 599 for 2,174 (.276 avg, .699 OPS) with 286 runs scored, 24 homers, 206 RBIs and 78 stolen bases. Aybar had 13 errors in 142 games at SS for the Angels last year and he showed off pretty darn good range. Aybar is a player on the rise for the Angels as he keeps getting better.

31-year old switch-hitting Maicer Izturis is Aybar’s top backup. He played in 16 games at SS for the Angels last year and he had 1 error while showing pretty good range.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE SS IN 2012: B
