The Los Angeles Angels are going to have a new look behind the plate in 2012

28-year old righty swinging Chris Iannetta was acquired in a deal with the Rockies over the winter and he will take over as the Angels’ new starting catcher. Iannetta played in 112 games for the Rockies last year and he was 82 for 345 (.238 avg, .785 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 14 homers, 55 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. He has now played in 458 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 336 for 1,429 (.235 avg, .788 OPS) with 196 runs scored, 63 homers, 236 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Iannetta played in 105 games behind the plate for the Rockies last year and he had 2 errors and 8 passed balls. He also threw out 26 of 100 (26%) base stealers last year and Rockies’ pitchers had a 4.22 ERA with him behind the plate.

24-year old switch-hitting Hank Conger will have to beat out Bobby Wilson this spring for the backup catcher job in 2012 for the Angels. Conger played in 59 games for the Angels last year and he was 37 for 177 (.209 avg, .638 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 6 homers and 19 RBIs. He has now played in 72 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 42 for 206 (.204 avg, .629 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 6 homers and 24 RBIs. Conger played in 56 games behind the plate for the Angels last year and he had 6 errors and 1 passed ball. Conger also threw out 10 of 65 (15.4%) base stealers and Angels’ pitchers had a 3.84 ERA with him behind the plate.

28-year old righty swinging Bobby Wilson will have a hard time making the Angels’ opening day roster unless he has a huge spring with the bat. Wilson played in 57 games for the Angels last year and he was 21 for 111 (.189 avg, .540 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs. He has now played in 116 games in his first four years with the Angels and he is 45 for 218 (.206 avg, .612 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 5 homers and 24 RBIs. Wilson played in 47 games behind the plate last year and he had 1 error and 0 passed balls. He also threw out 8 of 35 (22.9%) runners trying to steal on him and Angels’ pitchers had a 3.89 ERA with him behind the plate.
