The Los Angeles Angels look like they are going to have a decent bullpen in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 12 February 2012 at 5:24 pm

The only real addition to the Angels’ bullpen over the winter was veteran righty Latroy Hawkins, but that doesn’t matter as it was a pretty good bunch in 2011. Here is a look at the Angels’ bullpen as it stands right now:

Closer: Jordan Walden: 24-year old righty Jordan Walden will be the closer once again in 2012 for the Angels. He pitched in 62 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 5-5 with 32 saves, a 2.98 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Walden has now pitched in 78 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 5-6 with 33 saves, a 2.85 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. He reminds me of a young Troy Percival.

Set-Up Man: Scott Downs: 35-year old lefty Scott Downs had the best year of his career for the Angels in 2011. He pitched in 60 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 6-3 with 1 save, a 1.34 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Downs has now pitched in 439 games (50 starts) in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 33-31 with 17 saves, a 3.58 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. I look for him to have another big year for the Angels in 2012.

Righties: Latroy Hawkins: 39-year old Latroy Hawkins pitched in 52 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has now pitched in 823 games (98 starts) in his first 17 years in the majors and he is 63-85 with 87 saves, a 4.48 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Hawkins should be a nice improvement over Fernando Rodney, who signed with the Rays.

Rich Thompson: 27-year old Rich Thompson had a breakout season for the Angels in 2011. He pitched in 44 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Thompson has now pitched in 79 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

Bobby Cassevah: 26-year old Bobby Cassevah also pitched really well for the Angels in 2011. He pitched in 30 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 1-1 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Cassevah has now pitched in 46 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 2-3 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Look for Cassevah to win a job in the pen in 2012.

Trevor Bell: 25-year old Trevor Bell focused on relief last year with the Angels and he didn’t pitch that badly in his new role. Bell pitched in 19 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. He has now pitched in 52 games (11 starts) in his first three years with the Angels and he is 4-8 with a 5.21 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP.

Francisco Rodriguez: 28-year old Francisco Rodriguez pitched in 10 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 0-0 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He has now pitched in 53 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 1-3 with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Rodriguez will need a good spring to make the pitching staff out of spring training.

Kevin Jepsen: 27-year old Kevin Jepsen had surgery on his right knee last year which wiped out a lot of his season. He pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA and a 2.31 WHIP. Jepsen has now pitched in 147 games (0 starts) in his first four years with the Angels and he is 9-11 with 1 save, a 4.73 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

Michael Kohn: 25-year old Michael Kohn pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 0-1 with 1 save, a 7.30 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP. He has now played in 38 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 2-1 with 2 saves, a 4.01 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. Kohn has a nice upside if the Angels can get him throwing more strikes.

Lefties: 36-year old Hisanori Takahashi will team with Scott Downs to give the Angels a very impressive pair of lefties in the pen in 2012. He pitched in 61 games (0 starts) for the Angels last year and he was 4-3 with 2 saves, a 3.44 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Takahashi has now pitched in 114 games (12 starts) in his first two years with the Angels and he is 14-9 with 10 saves, a 3.55 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Look for Takahashi to have another solid year for the Angels in 2012.
