Kevin Jepsen is going to have season ending surgery for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 30 August 2011 at 12:05 pm

27-year old righty reliever Kevin Jepsen is going to have season ending surgery on his knee tomorrow. Jepsen pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA and a 2.31 WHIP. He also pitched in 24 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Angels and he was 1-3 with 7 saves, a 4.45 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Angels would have probably called Jepsen up when rosters expand on September 1st, but they should be o.k. without him.

Torii Hunter has been red hot in August for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 29 August 2011 at 5:52 pm

35-year old righty swinging RF Torii Hunter has been red hot with the bat so far this month for the Angels. Hunter has played in 24 games so far in August and he is 34 for 87 (.391 avg, 1.074 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 5 homers and 16 RBIs. Hunter has played in 129 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 125 for 482 (.259 avg, .751 OPS) with 60 runs scored, 18 homers, 67 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Angels need Hunter to stay hot because they are in a dogfight for the A.L. West with the Rangers right now.

Dan Haren continues to roll for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 25 August 2011 at 10:23 am

The Angels just gave Jered Weaver a big contract, but 30-year old righty starting pitcher Dan Haren has almost matched him in performance. Haren has pitched in 28 games (27 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 13-6 with a 2.98 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He has given up 161 hits in his first 190 1/3 innings so far this year, which is pretty darn impressive. He has also whiffed 156 batters while only walking 26 batters, as he is a bulldog on the mound who pounds the strikezone with his good stuff. Haren is one of the most underrated pitchers in all of baseball.

Peter Bourjos has been a nice suprise for the Los Angeles Angels in 2011

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 20 August 2011 at 3:59 pm

24-year old righty swinging CF Peter Bourjos has played in 112 games so far this year for the Angels and he is 103 for 370 (.278 avg, .768 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 6 homers, 27 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Bourjos has amazing range in the field and great speed on the bases. He deserves a Gold Glove this year and I think he can steal 50 bases in a season down the road. He has now played in 163 games in his first two years with the Angels and he is 140 for 551 (.254 avg, .720 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 12 homers, 42 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. Bourjos is giving the Angels a nice glimpse of the future in 2011.

Tyler Chatwood could be on thin ice with the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Thursday 18 August 2011 at 7:03 am

21-year old rookie righty starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood could be on thin ice with the Angels. He has pitched in 23 games (all starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 6-9 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. He has given up 146 hits while walking 63 batters in his first 103 1/3 innings this year and at times he has been hard to watch. In his defense, he’s a kid that’s still learning while pitching in the majors. The reason that Chatwood’s spot in the rotation could be in jeopardy is the fact that the Angels have called up 29-year old righty starting pitcher Jerome Williams. Williams has pitched in 11 games (10 starts) in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he is 7-2 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Williams also has some major league experience as he has pitched in 76 games (71 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 23-29 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.

UPDATE: (8/19/2011) - The Angels have sent Tyler Chatwood to AAA. He will be replaced in the starting rotation by Jerome Williams.

The Los Angeles Angels DFA Reggie Willits

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 18 August 2011 at 6:58 am

The Angels have designated 30-year old switch-hitting outfielder Reggie Willits for assignment. Willits played in 22 games for the Angels this year and he was 1 for 22 (.045 avg, .283 OPS) with 1 RBI. In his six years with the Angels, Willits played in 414 games in which he was 218 for 844 (.258 avg, .658 OPS) with 146 runs scored, 0 homers, 58 RBIs and 40 stolen bases. This is a shame as Willits was a good little backup outfielder at one time for the Angels.

UPDATE: (8/20/2011) - Reggie Willits has cleared waivers and accepted a outright assignment to AAA.

The Los Angeles Angels lose prospect C.J. Cron for the rest of the season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 17 August 2011 at 5:49 pm

21-year old righty swinging 1B/DH C.J. Cron was the #17 overall pick in the first round of the 2011 Amateur Draft last June. He decided to get right to work despite having a tear in his right shoulder that will need surgery at the end of the year. Cron played in 34 games in Rookie ball this year and he was 44 for 143 (.308 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 13 homers and 41 RBIs. He was DHing this year to protect his shoulder, but he will miss the rest of this season due to surgery on his right knee to repair ligament damage after he dislocated the knee over the weekend. Cron has a huge upside for the Angels and he should be ready to go next spring.

The Los Angeles Angels place Garrett Richards on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 17 August 2011 at 9:27 am

The Angels have placed rookie righty starting pitcher Garrett Richards on the 15-day disabled list due to a right abductor strain. Richards has started 2 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. Richards gave up 8 hits (2 homers) in his first 5 2/3 innings of his major league career, so he got hit hard in his first two starts. Veteran righty Joel Pineiro will replace Richards in the starting rotation. He has pitched in 21 games (18 starts) so far this year for the Angels and he is 5-6 with a 5.34 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. Pineiro has been hit hard this year as he has given up 144 hits in his first 111 1/3 innings so far this year.

Catcher continues to be a black hole for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Tuesday 16 August 2011 at 5:06 pm

The Angels probably wish they never dealt Mike Napoli over the winter as they have had a black hole behind the plate. 28-year old righty swinging Jeff Mathis is the Angels’ starting catcher and he’s a good defender. Too bad he hits like a pitcher. Mathis has played in 68 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 36 for 200 (.180 avg, 490 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Mathis has whiffed 61 times already this year as he often appears like he has a hole in his bat. 28-year old righty swinging Bobby Wilson might start getting a little more P.T. Wilson has played in 36 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 12 for 65 (.185 avg, .537 OPS) with 1 run scored and 4 RBIs. 23-year old switch-hitting Hank Conger should get another look soon for the Angels. He has played in 50 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 33 for 154 (.214 avg, .654 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 5 homers and 16 RBIs. The Angels need to make some changes behind the plate as they are getting absolutely no production out of this motley crew with the bats.

Matt Long is having a great year in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 15 August 2011 at 4:31 pm

24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Matt Long has been playing great baseball for the Angels this year in A-ball. Long has played in 115 games in A-ball this year and he is 138 for 455 (.303 avg, .898 OPS) with 100 runs scored, 16 homers, 72 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. He has now played in 295 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 336 for 1,121 (.300 avg, .853 OPS) with 225 runs scored, 22 homers, 177 RBIs and 52 stolen bases. With the Angels’ current outfield being a little long in tooth, the Angels might be moving Long up soon to AA.
