Gil Velazquez has been ripping the baseball in the minors for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 28 June 2011 at 2:36 pm

31-year old righty swinging SS/2B Gil Velazquez has been ripping the ball in AAA for the Angels. Velazquez has played in 67 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 79 for 225 (.351 avg, .898 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 4 homers, 38 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Velazquez hasn’t been known as much of a hitter until this season, so it might be the thin air of the PCL that’s the real reason for his pumped up numbers. He has played in 9 games in his major league career and he is 1 for 10 (.100 avg, .282 OPS) with 1 RBI. Velazquez is blocked on the Angels by more talented players in the infield, so he won’t likely get a chance in the majors unless the Angels suffer multiple injuries in the middle infield.

Vernon Wells has picked up the pace so far in June for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 28 June 2011 at 2:32 pm

32-year old righty swinging LF Vernon Wells has finally started to hit for the Angels. He has played in 17 games so far in June for the Angels and he is 16 for 63 (.254 avg, .769 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Wells has now played in 53 games this year for the Angels and he is 43 for 210 (.205 avg, .596 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 9 homers, 24 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Angels needed Wells to pick up the pace with the bat as they have had a hard time scoring runs lately.

Bobby Grich was a very solid 2B for the California Angels

Blogged under Blast from the Past, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 23 June 2011 at 7:47 am

Righty swinging 2B Bobby Grich was as tough as they come. He always seemed to be dirty as he was a very tough guy. His best year with the Angels came back in 1979 when he made the All-Star team while finishing 8th in the voting for the MVP Award. Grich played in 153 games in 1979 and he was 157 for 534 (.294 avg, .903 OPS) with 78 runs scored, 30 homers, 101 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Grich played in 1,222 games in his 10 years with the Angels and he was 1,103 of 4,100 (.269 avg, .806 OPS) with 601 runs scored, 154 homers, 557 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. Grich is #6 in Angels’ history in games played with 1,222. He is also #6 in hits (1,103), #6 in runs scored (601), #8 in doubles (183), #7 in homers (154), #7 in RBIs (557) and #3 in walks (630) in Angels’ history. Grich made it to 3 All-Star teams and he won 1 Silver Slugger Award in his 10 years with the Angels.

Jordan Walden has been nails for the Los Angeles Angels this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 June 2011 at 10:23 am

It didn’t take long for manager Mike Scioscia to tire of using Fernando Rodney as the closer. They replaced him early this year with 23-year old righty Jordan Walden and he has rewarded the faith in him so far this year. Walden has a big time right arm as his fastball is always 95mph+. In his first 6 games this June, Walden is 0-0 with 5 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP. He has only given up 2 hits while whiffing 12 batters in only six innings so far this month! Walden has pitched in 32 games (0 starts) for the Angels overall this year and he is 0-1 with 17 saves, a 2.59 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has only given up 24 hits while whiffing 38 batters in his 31 1/3 innings so far this year! But, he has walked 15 batters already this year. If Walden tightens up his control a bit, he is going to be one of the best closers in the majors for a long, long time.

It’s time for Vernon Wells to start earning his paycheck for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Friday 17 June 2011 at 6:31 pm

32-year old righty swinging LF Vernon Wells has been a complete bust so far this year for the Angels. Wells has played in 43 games for the Angels this year and he is 33 for 171 (.193 avg, .562 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 6 homers, 16 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Wells averaged 85.2 runs scored, 24.6 homers, 88.8 RBIs and 9.3 stolen bases his previous 9 years to joining the Angels. You have to think that Wells is going to snap out of his slump soon as he’s too good of a hitter to keep putting up numbers like he is right now.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed Jerome Williams

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 17 June 2011 at 8:15 am

The Angels have signed 29-year old righty starting pitcher Jerome Williams to a minor league deal. Williams hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2007 with the Nationals. Williams has pitched in 76 games (71 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 23-29 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This might be Williams’ last shot to get back to the majors and he was effective in his first couple of years with the Giants, so I wouldn’t bet against him making it all the way back.

The Los Angeles Angels will probably be buyers at the trade deadline

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were GM by chinmusic on Friday 17 June 2011 at 6:49 am

Angels’ owner Arte Moreno has deep pockets so don’t be surprised to see the Angels trying to make big moves at the trade deadline to improve the roster. I think the Angels are going to try to take advantage of the Mets’ money situation and try to make a play for 3B David Wright if he proves he’s healthy in July when he comes off the D.L. I also think the Angels could use some righty relief help and I think they will be placing calls to the Nationals (about Todd Coffey), the Cubs (about Kerry Wood), the Orioles (about Koji Uehara) and the Blue Jays (about Frank Francisco, Jon Rauch, Jason Frasor and Octavio Dotel). The Angels have spent too much money on payroll to give up on the year and be sellers at the trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Angels place Fernando Rodney on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 13 June 2011 at 7:27 pm

The Angels have placed 34-year old righty reliever Fernando Rodney on the 15-day disabled list due to an upper back strain. Rodney has pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Angels so far this year and he is 2-3 with 3 saves, a 4.09 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Angels have called up 25-year old righty reliever Bobby Cassevah to replace Rodney in the bullpen. Cassevah has pitched in 18 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. He pitched in 16 games (0 starts) last season for the Angels in his first taste of the majors last year and he was 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels have to be ecstatic with the play of Mark Trumbo

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 11 June 2011 at 9:07 am

The Angels have to be happy with the play of 25-year old righty swinging 1B Mark Trumbo so far this year. Trumbo has played in 59 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 53 for 210 (.252 avg, .767 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 11 homers, 29 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Trumbo is a hacker at the plate though as he has only walked 13 times while whiffing 51 times so far this year. That is nitpicking though as the Angels are glad that Trumbo stepped up with Kendry Morales now out for the season.

Jean Segura has had a solid career in the minors so far for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 7 June 2011 at 5:16 pm

21-year old righty swinging 2B Jean Segura was the Angels’ #3 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Segura played in 37 games in A-ball so far this year and he is 42 for 152 (.276 avg, .771 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 3 homers, 19 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. Segura has now played in 282 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 347 for 1,103 (.315 avg, .848 OPS) with 200 runs scored, 18 homers, 156 RBIs and 102 stolen bases. Segura is the Angels’ 2B of the future, but they are going to take things slow with him.
