The Los Angeles Angels place Vernon Wells on the D.L.
The Angels have placed starting LF Vernon Wells on the 15-day disabled list due to a sore right groin. Wells has played in 34 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 25 for 140 (.179 avg, .520 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 4 homers, 13 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Rookie Alexi Amarista played LF last night. He has played in 7 games for the Angels so far this year and he is 2 for 14 (.143 avg, .402 OPS) with 3 RBIs. The Angels might be more likely to start Bobby Abreu in LF, move Mark Trumbo from 1B to DH and use Howie Kendrick at 1B instead of 2B. This would allow the Angels to play Maicer Izturis everyday at 2B with Alberto Callaspo at 3B. Losing Wells will probably hurt the Angels defensively but he was hitting so bad that the offense might actually improve while he’s healing up.
