The Los Angeles Angels need a healthy Kendry Morales in 2011

The Angels season went into the toilet last season when 27-year old lefty swinging 1B Kendry Morales went down to a broken ankle, injured during a celebration at home plate after a walkoff homer. Morales played in 51 games for the Angels last season and he was 56 of 193 (.290 avg, .833 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 11 homers and 39 RBIs. Morales was on his way to having another excellent season like he did when he broke out in 2009. He played in 152 games for the Angels in 2009 and he was 173 of 566 (.306 avg, .924 OPS) with 86 runs scored, 34 homers, 108 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Morales is an average defensive 1B as he made 2 errors in 51 games there in 2011. I look for Morales to return with a vengeance in 2011 as he will be looking to make up for lost time.

25-year old righty swinging Mark Trumbo will be the first player in line at 1B if something happens to Morales again in 2011. Trumbo played in 8 games for the Angels last season and he was 1 of 15 (.067 avg, .192 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. He also played in 139 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 160 of 532 (.301 avg, .945 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 36 homers, 122 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Trumbo played 6 error-free games at 1B for the Angels but he’s an average defender at best.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE ANGELS 1B IN 2011: A
