Ervin Santana turns in a solid year for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 28 September 2010 at 2:40 pm

27-year old righty starting pitcher Ervin Santana has really been outstanding for the Angels this year. He has started 32 games for the Angels this year and he is 17-9 with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Santana has set a new career high in wins for his major league career. Santana always seems to pitch well in even numbered years. In his three even numbered years in his major league career he has started 97 games for the Angels in which he is 49-24 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. But in odd numbered years, Santana has been pretty awful pitching in 75 games (72 starts) in which he is 27-30 with a 5.17 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Hopefully Ervin Santana bumps his career trends next season which is a odd numbered one.

The Los Angeles Angels better think hard about keeping Mike Napoli

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 21 September 2010 at 12:22 pm

Rumors abound that 28-year old righty swinging C/1B Mike Napoli will be on the trading block over the winter. I think they should keep Napoli based on the fact that Jeff Mathis, Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger have not proven that they can hit at the major league level. I know that it wasn’t fair for me to throw Conger in that mix as he just got called up this month. Napoli has played in 129 games for the Angels this year and he is 103 of 422 (.244 avg, .805 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 25 homers, 66 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He does have some holes in his swing as he has whiffed 125 times this year but that’s the price you pay for his power. This is the third year in a row that Napoli has hit 20+ homers and catchers that can hit like that don’t grow on trees.

Erick Aybar looks like he’s done for the year for the Los Angeles Angels

26-year old starting shortstop Erick Aybar is likely done for the year with a suspected sports hernia. Aybar has played in 132 games this year for the Angels and he is 132 of 520 (.254 avg, .639 OPS) with 68 runs scored, 5 homers, 27 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. It looks as if the Angels are going to give Brandon Wood a lot of P.T. at shortstop the rest of the year.

Scot Shields is likely done for the year for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 20 September 2010 at 5:16 pm

34-year old righty reliever Scot Shields will likely miss the rest of the season with a strained muscle inside his right forearm. Shields has pitched in 43 games (1 start) for the Angels this year and he is 0-3 with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP. His main problem this year was his control as he has walked 34 batters in only 46 innings this year.

Scott Kazmir has been awful this year for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Wednesday 15 September 2010 at 9:46 pm

26-year old lefty starting pitcher made a good first impression on the Angels in 2009 after coming over from the Rays in a deal. He pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Angels last season and he was 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. The Angels had high hopes for Kazmir this year but he has been downright putrid. He has started 25 games for the Angels this year and he is 8-14 with a 5.99 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. He has allowed 23 homers and walked 74 batters this year in only 136 2/3 innings for the Angels. His strikeouts are also way down this season as he only has 87 of them. Kazmir is a mess right now and he doesn’t have a spot locked up in the 2011 rotation for the Angels so he better finish the season strong.

The Los Angeles Angels release Robb Quinlan

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 8 September 2010 at 11:11 am

The Angels have released 33-year old righty swinging 1B/3B Robb Quinlan. Quinlan played in 23 games for the Angels this year and he was 4 of 33 (.121 avg, .353 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He played in 458 games in his 8 years with the Angels and he was 307 of 1,112 (.276 avg, .723 OPS) with 134 runs scored, 25 homers, 121 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Quinlan was a decent bench player for the Angels but he appears near the end of the line now.

Jered Weaver has really been sharp for the Los Angeles Angels this year

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 7 September 2010 at 4:32 pm

27-year old righty starting pitcher Jered Weaver has really been outstanding for the Angels this year. He has started 29 games for the Angels this year and he is 11-11 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Weaver has whiffed 205 batters (a new career high) in 189 innings this season while allowing only 158 hits showing just how nasty he has been this year. Weaver has also had pinpoint control this year as he has only walked 51 batters this year. He has now pitched in 139 games (all starts) in his five years with the Angels and he is 62-38 with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He is now the unquestioned ace of the Los Angeles Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels release Brian Stokes

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Tuesday 7 September 2010 at 4:27 pm

The Angels have released 30-year old righty reliever Brian Stokes. Stokes pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Angels this year and he was 0-0 with a 8.10 ERA and a 2.52 WHIP. He has given up 26 hits (4 of which were homers) in only 16 2/3 innings this year as he was hit hard. Stokes did whiff 16 batters but he also walked 16 batters which is just not acceptable at the major league level. The Angels were smart to pull the plug on Stokes.
