The Los Angeles Angels need to improve at the infield corners to catch the Rangers

The Los Angeles Angels are 46-39 on the season which has them 3.5 games behind the Rangers in the A.L. West. The Angels should be aggressive in their pursuit of a 1B and 3B in the trade market. Of the 1B likely available Jorge Cantu, Prince Fielder, Derek Lee, Lance Berkman and Adam LaRoche make the most sense. Lyle Overbay, Ty Wigginton and Casey Kotchman are likely fallback options at 1B. Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, Ty Wigginton, Miguel Tejada, Jose Lopez, Jorge Cantu, Pedro Feliz and Akinori Iwamura all made sense at 3B in verying degrees. As far as the lefty out of the pen it seems as if Scott Downs, Will Ohman, Rafael Perez, Jerry Blevins, Doug Slaten, Tim Byrdak and Javier Lopez look like possible targets. If the Blue Jays fall any further behind I would attempt to make a huge deal with them involving Jose Bautista, Lyle Overbay and Scott Downs.

Torii Hunter is staying in L.A. to represent the Angels in the All-Star Game

34-year old outfielder will be the only player on the Angels that won’t get the All-Star Break off as he has made the team. Hunter has played in 79 games for the Angels this season and he is 85 of 289 (.294 avg, .899 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 14 homers, 60 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. This will be Hunter’s 4th All-Star Game appearance and he certainly deserves it as his bat has been carrying the Angels’ offense. Don’t forget his outstanding glove work which could help the A.L. win the game next week.

UPDATE: (7/6/2010) – Jered Weaver has been selected to the American League All-Star team to replace C.C. Sabathia who won’t be able to pitch in the game. Weaver has started 17 games for the Angels this year and he is 8-3 with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. He has only given up 89 hits in 108 2/3 innings while whiffing a league leading 124 batters. Weaver finally gets his due as he deserved to be picked to the All-Star team initially as he has pitched better than Sabathia this year.

The Los Angeles Angels will likely put outfield Mike Trout on the fast track

18-year old righty swinging outfielder Mike Trout looks like a natural. He came into this season as the Angels’ #3 rated prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America and he’s showing why. He has played in 74 games in A-ball so far this season and he is 105 of 290 (.362 avg, .978 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 6 homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. Trout has now played in 118 games in his professional career and he is 168 of 469 (.358 avg, .950 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 7 homers, 62 RBIs and 51 stolen bases. The Angels will likely put Trout on the fast track as he is Mike Scioscia’s kind of ballplayer.
