The Los Angeles Angels lose Kendry Morales for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 30 May 2010 at 8:25 am

27-year old switch hitting 1B Kendry Morales will have surgery later today to repair a broken left leg. His leg was snapped in a celebration after he hit a walkoff grand slam to beat the Mariners 5-1 in 10 innings. This is a major blow to the Angels as Morales is quite frankly the best player on the team. He has played in 51 games for the Angels this season and he is 56 of 193 (.290 avg, .833 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 11 homers and 39 RBIs. This will definitely hurt any chance the Angels had of going back to the playoffs in 2010 as Morales will miss at least 10-12 weeks and maybe the rest of the year.

The Los Angeles Angels have to be a little bit concerned with Scott Kazmir

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Saturday 29 May 2010 at 2:26 pm

26-year old lefty starting pitcher Scott Kazmir just doesn’t have it right now. He has started 9 games for the Angels this year and he is 3-5 with a 6.34 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Kazmir has been getting hit hard this year as he has given up 55 hits (8 homers) in only 49 2/3 innings this season. He has walked 24 batters this season while only striking out 34. The strikeouts are a big concern as Kazmir is just not missing as many bats as usual. I wonder if he’s hurting right now and just hasn’t told anyone.

The Los Angeles Angels place Brandon Wood on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 25 May 2010 at 8:19 pm

The Angels have placed 25-year old righty swinging 3B Brandon Wood on the 15-day disabled list with a hip flexor strain. Wood has played in 39 games for the Angels this season and he is 19 of 122 (.156 avg, .381 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 7 RBIs. Wood has looked completely overmatched this season at the major league level as he has whiffed 36 times while only walking 2 times. He is out of options so the end of his career with the Angels could be near. The Angels have activated 29-year old switch hitting Maicer Izturis from the D.L. and he is the starting 3B tonight. He has played in 14 games for the Angels this year and he is 10 of 39 (.256 avg, .695 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 10 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Izturis will likely give the Angels vastly improved play both offensively and defensively at 3B.

The Los Angeles Angels need a 3B

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 25 May 2010 at 9:47 am

Even with Maicer Izturis coming off the D.L. soon I think the Angels need to make a big play for a legit power hitting 3B. The Astros (Pedro Feliz), Indians (Jhonny Peralta) and the Orioles (Miguel Tejada) all have 3B who would be a huge upgrade for the Angels. The Astros would probably be willing to accept a trade in which they parted with Pedro Feliz, Chris Sampson and Jason Michaels for Bobby Cassevah, Trevor Bell, Bobby Wilson and Brandon Wood. The Indians would without a doubt take Brandon Wood and Trevor Bell back for Peralta. The Orioles would probably toss in Mark Hendrickson along with Miguel Tejada for Brandon Wood, Bobby Wilson, Trevor Bell, Bobby Cassevah and Terry Evans. I think the best deal out of this bunch would be the one with the Indians for Peralta.

The Maicer Izturis watch is on for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 21 May 2010 at 5:35 pm

29-year old switch hitting 2B/SS/3B Maicer Izturis is almost ready to return to action for the Angels and they can’t wait. Izturis has played in 14 games for the Angels this season and he is 10 of 39 (.256 avg, .695 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 10 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Izturis will likely get a chance right away to boot 25-year old righty swinging Brandon Wood off 3B. Wood has played in 37 games for the Angels this season and he is 19 of 117 (.162 avg, .397 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 7 RBIs. Wood has only walked 2 times this season while whiffing 35 as he shows a utter lack of discipline at the plate.

Hank Conger is getting closer to playing for the Los Angeles Angels

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 14 May 2010 at 8:36 am

22-year old switch hitting catcher Hank Conger is the #1 prospect in the Angels’ minor league system according to Baseball America. The Angels have Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis and Bobby Wilson at the major league level but if Conger starts to get hot with the bat he could push at least one of them off the team (likely in a trade). Conger has played in 25 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 24 of 93 (.258 avg, .742 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 8 RBIs. He has now played in 327 games in his five years in the minors and he is 358 of 1,219 (.294 avg, .811 OPS) with 168 runs scored, 39 homers and 213 RBIs. Conger is getting close to playing in L.A.

The Los Angeles Angels place Brian Stokes on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 12 May 2010 at 11:54 am

The Angels have placed 30-year old righty reliever Brian Stokes on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder fatigue. Stokes has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Angels this season and he is 0-0 with a 7.31 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP. He was having a lot of trouble this season for the Angels as he has allowed 24 hits (3 homers) and he has walked 16 batters in only 16 innings. The Angels have recalled 24-year old righty reliever Bobby Cassevah from AAA to replace Stokes in the bullpen. He pitched in 4 games (0 starts) earlier this season for the Angels and he was 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Cassevah has also pitched in 10 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this season in which he was 1-1 with 1 save, a 3.09 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

The Los Angeles Angels place Maicer Izturis on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 9 May 2010 at 7:15 am

The Angels have placed 29-year old switch hitting infielder Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder. Izturis has played in 14 games this season for the Angels and he is 10 of 39 (.256 avg, .695 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 10 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Angels have called up 27-year old righty swinging infielder Kevin Frandsen and they stuck him right into the lineup at 3B. He made a couple of nice plays last night and he was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Frandsen has played in 26 games in AAA-ball this season in which he was 26 of 97 (.268 avg, .708 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Frandsen could get a lot of playing time for the Angels while he is up but they will still miss Izturis who could also handle playing shortstop.

The Los Angeles Angels DFA Fernando Rodriguez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 7 May 2010 at 9:22 pm

The Angels have designated 25-year old righty reliever Fernando Rodriguez for assignment. Rodriguez pitched in 7 games (1 start) in AAA-ball this season and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.40 WHIP. He pitched in one game in his career with the Angels (last year) and he was 0-0 with a 27.00 ERA and a 4.50 WHIP. The Angels need Rodriguez’ roster spot so that they could promote 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Michael Ryan. Ryan played in 21 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 27 of 77 (.351 avg, .918 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 1 homer, 12 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He last played in the majors in 2005 with the Twins. Ryan has played in 127 games in his major league career in which he is 69 for 260 (.265 avg, .721 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 7 homers, 33 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. To make room on the 25-man roster for Ryan the Angels have sent 31-year old righty reliever Matt Palmer to AAA. Palmer pitched in 9 games (1 start) for the Angels this season and he was 0-1 with a 6.26 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP. He gave up 31 hits and he walked 16 batters in only 23 innings for the Angels this season showing how poorly he was pitching. But if Palmer pitches well in AAA I’m fairly certain that he will get another chance with the Angels at some point in 2010.

The Los Angeles Angels need Erick Aybar to step up

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Friday 7 May 2010 at 4:50 pm

The Angels went into spring training with the idea of having 26-year old switch hitter Erick Aybar as the full time starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. Aybar has been a disappointment with the bat so far this season for the Angels who have to start considering dropping him in the batting order. Aybar has played in 28 games for the Angels this season and he is 27 of 110 (.245 avg, .652 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Angels are currently without their infield safety net as Maicer Izturis is hurting so Aybar is going to keep playing every day no matter how badly he struggles with the bat.
