The Los Angeles Angels sign Fernando Rodney

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 December 2009 at 5:42 pm

The Angels have signed 32-year old righty reliever Fernando Rodney to a 2-year, $11 million dollar contract. Rodney pitched in 73 games (0 starts) for the Tigers last season and he was 2-5 with 37 saves, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. He has now pitched in 308 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 15-30 with 70 saves, a 4.28 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Rodney will compete with Brian Fuentes for the closer’s job in 2010 this spring with the loser being the set-up man.

The Los Angeles Angels sign Hideki Matsui

The Angels have signed 35-year old lefty swinging DH/OF Hideki Matsui to a 1-year, $6.5 million dollar deal. Matsui played in 142 games for the Yankees last season and he was 125 for 456 (.274 avg, .876 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 28 homers and 90 RBIs. He has now played in 916 games in his 7 years in the majors and he is 977 for 3,448 (.292 avg, .852 OPS) with 536 runs scored, 140 homers, 597 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Matsui will likely replace Vladimir Guerrero at DH and he will do a good job for them as they won’t be losing much if at all in 2010.

The Los Angeles Angels let two players walk

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 14 December 2009 at 8:04 pm

The Angels have decided not to tender contracts to 27-year old righty swinging 3B Matt Brown or 27-year old righty starter/reliever Dustin Moseley. Brown played in 110 games in Rookie + AAA-ball last season and he was 99 for 398 (.249 avg, .749 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 13 homers, 71 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Brown played in parts of two years for the Angels in his career appearing in 15 games in which he was 1 for 24 (.042 avg, .231 OPS) with 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Moseley pitched in 3 games (all starts) last season for the Angels and he was 1-0 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. He pitched in 64 games (23 starts) in four years with the Angels and he was 8-7 with a 5.41 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. Moseley might help some team when he gets healthy but the Angels will probably be able to replace him.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Jose Arredondo

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 12 December 2009 at 4:43 pm

25-year old righty reliever Jose Arredondo will miss all of the 2010 season and likely part of the 2011 season as he is due to have Tommy John Surgery soon. Arredondo pitched in 43 games (0 starts) for the Angels last season and he was 2-3 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He has now pitched in 95 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Angels and he is 12-5 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. This is a big blow to the Angels’ bullpen as they were depending on him to pitch late in games.

UPDATE: The Angels did not tender a contract for the 2010 season to Arredondo pretty much ending his time with the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels will likely be one of the most active teams at the Winter Meetings

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 7 December 2009 at 12:31 pm

For the first time in a few years the Angels have a lot of question marks heading into the Winter Meetings. First off, the Angels desperately want to trade Gary Matthews even if they have to pick up a large chunk of what is owed to him. Then the Angels have to address 3B, DH and the bullpen. They also will be looking to add another solid starting pitcher. That is a lot of work to do and the Angels need to decide whether to make trades to fill the holes or sign free agents. I’m thinking it will be a mixture of the two but that the Angels will at least sign one big free agent this week.
