Gone are Casey Kotchman and Mark Teixeira. With that in mind the Angels are going to likely give the starting job to 25-year old switch hitting Kendry Morales. Morales played in 27 games with the Angels last season and he was 13 for 61 (.213 avg, .666 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers and 8 RBIs. He also didn’t make any errors in 6 games at 1B last season for the Angels. Morales also played in 83 games in Rookie + AAA ball last season in which he was 119 for 338 (.352 avg, .946 OPS) with 50 runs scored, 16 homers and 74 RBIs. I look for Morales to have a solid breakout season if the Angels just give him a chance at the full time job in 2009.

31-year old righty swinging Robb Quinlan will likely be the backup 1B in 2009 for the Angels. He played in 68 games for the Angels last season and he was 43 for 164 (.262 avg, .637 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 11 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Quinlan did play 22 error-free games at 1B last season so he can handle the position defensively. His lack of power would hinder his ability to start at 1B on a regular basis.
