Who will win the fifth starters job for the Los Angeles Angels?

This will be a very interesting Spring Training battle for the Angels. Joe Saunders will likely have the edge over Ervin Santana because the Angels don’t have any other lefty starters. Santana has better stuff than Saunders has but he’s also more likely to help the Angels in the bullpen than Saunders is. Santana has pitched in 84 games (82 starts) in his major league career and he is 35-30 with 1 save, a 4.84 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. His numbers would be much better if he just concentrated better on the road where he has been horrific his whole major league career. Saunders has pitched in 33 games (all starts) in his major league career and he is 15-8 with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Saunders is very hittable so he has to be fine with his stuff to succeed.

The Angels have signed outfielders Dee Brown and Chad Hermansen to minor league contracts. 29 year old Dee Brown played in 8 games last season for the A’s and he was 0 for 3 with 2 whiffs. Brown has now played in 271 games in his major league career and he is 190 for 814 (.233 avg, .613 OPS) with 86 runs scored, 14 homers and 89 RBIs. 30-year old Chad Hermansen hasn’t played in the majors since 2004 with the Blue Jays. Hermansen has played in 189 games in his major league career and he is 96 for 492 (.195 avg, .584 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 13 homers, 34 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Hopefully, the Angels won’t need either of these guys next season.
