The Los Angeles Angels had a stellar first half

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Tuesday 10 July 2007 at 4:10 pm

The Angels finish the first half of the 2007 season with a 53-35 record which has them in first place in the American League West, 2.5 games ahead of the Mariners. Vladimir Guerrero is having an MVP type season as he’s been carrying the offense. Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey and the bullpen have all been outstanding for the Angels this season. But to hold off the Mariners the Angels will need Ervin Santana and Bartolo Colon to pick up their games. The Angels do have an outstanding farm system which will allow them to get whatever they think they need for a playoff run.

Orlando Cabrera of the Angels got snubbed for the All-Star Game

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 6 July 2007 at 6:56 pm

Orlando Cabrera definately deserved to be on the All Star Team with the way he has played this season. Cabrera has played in 83 games this season and he is 111 for 337 (.329 avg, .814 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 5 homers, 48 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Cabrera has also played great defense like he always does. Cabrera was unlucky for two reasons 1.) Jim Leyland selected his own shortstop (Carlos Guillen) as Derek Jeter’s backup and 2.) The Rangers had to have someone make the team so Michael Young was chosen despite the fact that Cabrera has outplayed him this season so far. Basically, Orlando Cabrera got stiffed.

The Los Angeles Angels designate Hector Carrasco for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Wednesday 4 July 2007 at 11:39 am

The Angels have decided that they’ve seen enough out of Hector Carrasco for the season. He pitched well for them last year but he’s been awful so far this season which led to the Angels letting him go. In 29 games (1 start) this season for the Angels, Carrasco was 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. In 38.1 innings this season Carrasco has allowed 44 hits, 8 homers, walked 23 batters and whiffed 33. The Angels have recalled Chris Resop from AAA to replace Carrasco in the bullpen. Resop has pitched in 27 games in AAA ball and he was 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. He has thrown 45.1 innings this season and he has allowed 50 hits, walked 16 batters and whiffed 39.

The Los Angeles Angels designate Shea Hillenbrand for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Wednesday 4 July 2007 at 11:19 am

The Angels decided that they would rather have other players get the at bats that Shea Hillenbrand was gettting this season. Hillenbrand has played in 53 games this season for the Angels and he was 50 for 197 (.254 avg, .600 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers and 22 RBIs. They should have no problem trading him as the Yankees seem to really want him. The Angels have activated Garrett Anderson off of the disabled list to replace Hillenbrand on the roster and likely in the lineup as well. Anderson has played in 35 games this season and he’s 35 for 132 (.265 avg, .684 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 3 homers and 15 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels place Erick Aybar on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 4 July 2007 at 11:10 am

The Angels have placed Erick Aybar on the 15 day-disabled list with a a bad wrist. He will require surgery on the wrist on Thursday and he will miss the next 6-8 weeks. Aybar has played in 61 games and he’s 37 for 157 (.236 avg, .548 OPS) with 15 runs scored and 15 RBIs. The Angels have activated Maicer Izturis from the DL and he comes back in a nick of time for the Angels. Izturis has played in 30 games this season and he’s 23 for 95 (.242 avg, .611 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer and 14 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels place Mike Napoli on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 4 July 2007 at 11:01 am

The Angels have placed starting catcher Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle. Napoli has played in 56 games this season and he’s 43 for 177 (.243 avg, .786 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 8 homers, 29 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Angels will miss Napoli’s bat as his replacements are better defenders than they are hitters. Jose Molina will get most of the playing time as he played in 30 games this season for the Angels and he’s 23 for 100 (.230 avg, .525 OPS) with 8 runs scored and 5 RBIs. Molina isn’t much of a hitter but he’s a good defender. Jeff Mathis has been brought up from AAA ball and he’s played in 66 games and he’s 61 for 250 (.244 avg, .671 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 5 homers and 26 RBIs. Mathis has failed in his earlier chances with the Angels but he’s still young so he might start to live up to his potential soon.
